If you compress a track with hardware, you can't "undo" it. I can track anyone at the proper level, and find the perfect compression settings in the box after the fact. That way I don't have to ask someone to retrack their take, because my compression setting was wrong...
You CAN get the same sound, you just don't know how.mrT said:sure you CAN. but I can't get the same sound doing that. Irecord at 16bit. I also use copious EQ while tracking sometimes too![]()

! and I even track at up -2db sometimes!

rules are made to be broken. If it sounds good stick with it.

You can choose to do things your way, that's fine. But don't try to convert others to your process, when your process allows for more flaws than what's being recommended to them already.
So it's not so much, "stick to what sounds good" it's moreso, "stick to what I know, and refuse to learn best practices of the industry".![]()
mrT said:You like to talk out of your ass don't you. I'm telling them how I do it. I wasn't saying you were wrong either. Just that I do it a different way. If you like to track at -18 keep up the good work. I don't.
Maybe I'm actually a better engineer than you because I can make decisions about compression and EQ and put them on tape when all you want to do is get your nice little clean track and play with all the plugins. and exactly what is my huge advantage to recording at -18 when all I'm doing is laying vocals on a beat? I have a whole lot of wasted headroom that I'm not going to use. and if I'm already compressing before I send it in I don't need to compress later so I'm just getting 16db more noise if I record at -18.
and it only makes flaws if the engineer isn't good enough to do it right...
but whatever. The shit I do speaks for itself. Go ahead. let me hear how all the shit that I do makes the tracks in my sig sound worse than if I would have recorded at -18. please. show me the light. listen to them and let me know great hip hop guru...
he doesnt get paid for NOT knowing his stuffFyre said:yo change i just tried that recordin at around -18dB and that shit works like a charm man..... i just compressed up some using really basic compresson and its extremely clean sounding to me... i think all i need is a little EQ and maybe some reverb...... this should help me out a lot man thx again.......

I never said you were wrong, I said you don't use best practices according to the industry. Think I'm wrong? Go argue it out with the professionals on the site. They'll reiterate it for you. Headroom is necessary in recording, especially during mastering. The more headroom the better. Do some research.
By the way, you're exposing the hater in you.![]()
