Hello Everyone,

I am wondering how some of you have fared recording acoustic (classical) piano with the AEA R84.

I would be grateful to hear your impressions.

I am considering buying a second R84 to record (classical) flute and piano together.

Thank you,

Peace,

Hi Sunflute, I noticed no one's responded, so probably on the BBS here there aren't many AEA users. It's pretty high end. So I was going to suggest that you might want to do a google search of the archives of the pro audio newsgroup rec.audio.pro where it's been discussed a lot. If on Google groups page you type in rec.audio.pro AEA R84 you'll get lots of info.

I use a Beyer ribbon mic, but haven't used the AEA myself.

Beyer Mic

Hello Tim,

Thank you for your suggestion, I will do that.

Which Beyer mic do you use? the M160? I've recorded flute with that one and liked it alot.

Have you ever tried the beyer with piano?

I used the AEA R84 on vocals (particularly female), backgrounds, and acoustic guitar, and it's been wonderful for all those applications, but I have not used it on piano.

I've only used it on nylon string guitar. My impression of its sound though, is that because of its midrange detail it would sound good on anything with smart placement. I got it over other ribbons because it's a hypercardioid and I needed that rather than figure 8.
