I am playing the russian river acoustic festival saturday, and don't have a current acoustic cd, so I went to work yesterday recording, and I got it all mixed and ready to go today. I like the challange of making a complete cd, begining to end, in 24 hours, while working my regular day job. Here are some samples

they ripped off the old bluesmen
health care blues
jump start my battery
the world is falling down
trying to die with a good heart

I would like any feedback, especially how to get the guitars more in the mix. I do this all as you see on the soundclick photo. the drums, guitar, voice, harp, are all within inches of each other. THanks! Walter

Jesus crap man. This is some great blues. I can't give you any advice, I might ruin it for you. I like it just the way it is. You're a one man recking crew.

I guess you won't be worried about being able to work with the rest of the band, or the engineer, or the producer. That is the best one man show I have ever heard. It is also the only 1 man show I have heard, but don't let that take anything away from it.

My only question is how in the heck do you sound check?

thanks for those kind words guys! I was blessed to work, and live with, many of the blues greats, and hopefully some of their magic has worn off on me. Being new to the recording thing-2 years- I get to self doubting. Making everything up as I go along, is a blast. I do have a trio(bass and drums), but usually end up doing the 1 man band thing. It has it's limitations, but the freedom factor, for keeping my own time, etc, is priceless. When I work with my band, they follow my time, or there is no band. I worked with Lightning Hopkins, and he taught me that if you have your own sense of time, don't hide it and join the crowd, but stick to your time and let it shine! Luckily, I have had such great musicians willing to play with my simple thing, that they fall right into it. I have had a blessed musical life.

Sound check? What is that? I set up in about 10 minutes and roll. I play real quiet, using a thd hotplate, to tame my deluxe reverb. The DR is set to about 2 1/2, and the hotplate at the lowest setting. I put the PA speaker behind my head, and turn it up till it starts to feel full. When I play festivals, and larger clubs, with their own PA's, I set up the same way, and keep my monitor mix barely above acoustic level, just like when I do my own sound. What they do with it on the audience side is out of my hands. I figure as long as I feel good on stage with the sound, the audience will dig it too. Walter

I listened to They Ripped Off the Old Bluesmen. Well done Walter! Excellent vocal and guitar lines. The recording captures it very realistically and with a rich sound. IMO the snare's a little hot in the mix, but if this was tracked all at once guess you have limited options for changing it. I think the gtr would come across just right if the snare was lowered - it'd be tedious but perhaps you could get a good result by manually reduce the highs or high-mids at each snare hit.

thanks Timothy for listening and that useful feedback. I was afraid I would get advice like that. I record often a cd a day, and did about 400 over the last year. With this kind of output, I only spend about 5 minutes tweaking each song to what you hear. I wish there was a quicker fix! Walter

Beautifully captured, warm vocals with that nice sounding reverb - great voice. Sometimes I couldn't help but feel that I wanted to hear something on the other side of the sound field, across from the guitar, since I'm listening on headphones. Still sounds great though.

thanks for listening Robin. I am limited to 4 tracks at the moment, but am going to up it to 6 soon(all live). I will then be able to put 1 mic on vocals/harp, 1 on electric guitar, 1 on the snare, 1 on the high hat, 1 on the bass drum, and 1 on the room sound. THen I will be able to pan more stuff. THanks! Walter
