recording on a mac

I don't know much about recording but I am looking into recording on my mac. I've heard of Cubase VST and Cakewalk and they sound like what I would want to get. Now would I need a mixer and a soundcard to use these? And if I do do you guys have any recommendations? Also, is Digidesign's Digi 001 worth the cost?

You may already have a soundcard in your mac, if so - find out everything there is to know about it. Download some mp3's and see if you can play 'em back.
