Recording on "8 track" - cartidge, that is

I have been recording some local talent in my basement on my Korg D16 lately. My goal is to put out a "demo cd" showing off my efforts. Also, I want to put out the demo on 8 track - yeah you heard me - 8 track. As in 30 years ago. I have about 50 blank cartidges in original factory wrap that are dying to be filled with music. The dynamic response is not great on this medium. Any eq/recording tips to make the best recording. One of my 8 track recording decks (yes I have several) has dolby B. Should I use this?

Don't ask me why I do these things. I'm just following the voices.

When I was a teen I came across an 8-track (cartridge) recorder and messed around with it......... it also had "Dobly"(!!!)..... it did about as good a job as a Radio Shack cassette deck.........

Anyways, assuming you STILL want to do this, I wouldn't recommend using Dolby - most 8-track players never had it, so you won't gain any noise reduction advantage.... you will then need to compress muchly - to try and get the overall level WAY above the noise floor. This would likely be a great application for using a Finalizer-type processor - getting the signal hot, while still maintaining some dynamic element - to compensate for that exceptionally high noise floor again. You may also need to compensate for the play-back shortcomings (on those godawful players) by over-using EQ (bring on the smilie-face graphic!!! *kidding.... then again, I'm maybe not!!*).

That's about it........... You couldn't PAY ME to work with 8-track!!!!!!!!! (well, maybe I'd do it for 500 million dollars........) :D

I'd do it for 400mil as long as I could use some of them high falutin' $10,000 akg mics. And of course I'd have to shop around for a stock '73 Monte Carlo to monitor mixes in, whilst I cruise.
 
Hey markert, if you send my mom's an e-mail she can prob'ly do it for you! You see, she still has her 8-track player/cassette/33-45rpm turntable/AM&FM all in one stereo for the past 32 years.
Warning! She'll charge you 50 per hour AND she does her own
mastering!
 
8 track galore

My parents have 3 systems with an 8 track player...4 if you count the one in the 67 (or 66?) Dodge Charger in the garage...there may be more.

Thanks for the advice. And, yes, I am a freak! The main reason I have 8 track is because my absolutely beautiful, fully restored 1966 mercury parklane breezeway (back windshield rolls down) sedan has an underdash 8 track, and I wanted to keep the car original. Besides, you should see some of the stuff you can buy on 8 track at the thrift store for 25 cents - Sonny and Cher Live, Cheap Trick at Budokan, Soundtrack to "Billy Jack". Come on, this is living.
 
....... and they fit in the center console of my goat oh sooooo nicely, fidelity??? That's for when you're happily married.

*snort* Cheap Trick.... hmmmph, you haven't heard anything until you've heard The Eagles "The Long Run" on 8-track.... the use of the Aural Acoustic Exciter really pays off for them there - especially in the 8-track medium.... (too bad they mixed it on NS-10s covered with a wet blanket!!!) :eek:

Aaaaaaagh!

8 track..........hmmmmmmmmmm........8 track.........hmmmmmmmm.I used to love the way those things would fade down in volume right before a track would change,and then deliver a nice loud "Ka-CHUNK!" when it morphed to the next track......then,of course,the volume would swell back to normal.

they make tape converters for cd players, why dont they make them for 8tracks too?

NO, really, Home Depot has 8 track converters..... IN THE SLEDGE HAMMER ISLE!!!
