Recording more than 8 drum tracks at once....

hi everyone, i just recently picked up an A&H 24 channel mixer to replace my existing 8 channel mixer, and i want to record more than 8 drum tracks at once for I have multiple drums. Now the problem lies with the sound card. I am currently using terratec's ews88mt 8 in 8 out. Does this mean that I have to get another 8 in 8 out soundcard to record 16 drum tracks? If so, I just got my hands on the M-audio's delta 1010lt, 10 in 10 out. Is there the possibility of combining the two? whats the deal? i dont want to spend the 3 hrs ripping apart the studio to find out nothing will work, so any input will help....

hi there,

i don't think that you can use the two together,,,as the software will only let you select one input device;

however, if memory serves, multiple ews88mts (phase88) can be used together in the same setup, giving 16/24/32 inputs.

you can also daisy chain delta 1010s (quick google,,,hope i'm not wrong),

so my guess is, your options are

1 sell ews88mt for a 2nd delta1010
2 sell delta 1010 for a 2nd ews88mt




it's also worth remembering that the ews88mt and delta give 10 in and 10 out. they has spdif in, which can provide the other two channels, if you have something like a two channel digital preamp with spdif out...


this is no use to you in terms of using your mixer, but still...worth noting.
 
I've been using the Audiofire 12 (firewire interface with 12 inputs) and a bunch of outboard preamps.

But I can only play one drum at a time, so it's kind of waste.
 
You cannot mix and match soundcards from different manufacturers.

ASIO only lets you do 1 device driver at a time.
Even if you get them working together, the crystal clocks in each device will 'beat' at different rates and get out of sync after a while.

You have to get a soundcard/interface with more ins/outs.

Some manufacturers allow you to daisy-chain soundcards IF they use the same driver and IF they were written properly. (I bought my Motu828mkII because I can gang 3 Motu devices together on one driver for over 60 simultaneous i/os.)
 
The best thing might be to sell the ews88mt and get another 1010LT. You can run 5 1010LT's at one time. That would give you 60 tracks, and there are people that want 60 tracks, but I'm not one of them! To me the concept of recording drums, each one on it's own track, is a dated philosophy.

I'd rather have drums recorded with just a few Neumanns than lots of tracks done with cheap mics. Four mics work for me.

It's important that the drummer play with a usable balance between his limbs. Crappy drummers can't do that.
 
New Sound Card

Thanks everyone for the input, i found another ews88, but the question lies, do i just install it just like the other 1, and stack it along with it? i personally am looking for 12 tracks at 1 time so 16 will do the trick. i got the delta running, but like Tim said, it gets outta sync after a while, plus its one or the other, so being able to combine the 2 ews88's would be amazing.
 
yehp,,,that's pretty much it..

see the ews88mt control panel..? it should have options for multiple card mode and greyed out boxes for card 2 3 and 4?

should be fairly straight forward...good luck :)
