I know this question has been probably been asked in the past but using the search function I haven't found anything to my liking. So here it goes. I want to record a live show for my brother in-law's band, I normally record the video but the audio quality sucks so I would like to record the audio using a sepearte recorder and mic's and then add the audio to the video and sync it up on my computer. I have a Boss BR-864 recorder and two sure sm-57 mics. I also run the sound for them and they only mic the vocals so that is the only thing coming out of the mains. What would be the best position to set up the mics without getting too much of the vocals? I was thinking of just two mic stands out in front of the mains but not too close to them. The gig is this friday so any help y'all can give would be appreciated.

Put the mics in an xy config right next to you when you are running sound. The mixing board is usually where everything sounds the best.
BTW when you go to sync up the audio and video, you will have to do a lot of micro-edits to keep the two in sync. In order not to have a problem, you would have to send wordclock (or video sync) to the recorder so that they are cycling at the same time.
