Armistice

Son of Yoda
Hi

Trying to capture "live" rehearsals of duo (2 mics 3 guitar ins) direct by feeding from mixer/PA:

http://europe.yamaha.com/en/products/music-production/mixers/mg_series_cx_models/mg124cx/

Obviously I could just take a stereo feed from mixer, no probs... can work that one out on my own.

Wondering however if I can get a line out of the individual channels via the inserts that are there on the first 4 channels (sure I can work out a feed for the 5th easily enough direct from guitar FX stereo out...) and thus give myself "mixability" for the individual tracks...

And if so, is it just a normal lead? I understand how inserts work as inserts - my understanding is that the output is the tip of the "stereo" plug and the the input is the ring... so, in theory just using a normal patch type lead would work...?

Or is this just incoherent babbling and I have no idea what I'm talking about? :D

Tanx...

I'm pretty sure that it will work but, isn't it all pre fader, EQ and such?
What's wrong will you aux out bank Pan L and R .... never mind I just looked at your link to the console. DAMN.

In this case I would break out my Allen Heath mix wizard, it has 6 aux sends.

What else will you be carrying to the show to do the live mix/recording?

Ah yes, suspect you're right on the pre-mix / fade thing... damn..

It's easy enough to work out whether it'll work or not, but not while I'm sitting at my work desk pretending to work...

It's not actually a show, just rehearsing in my lounge room, so I can dick around with it and find what works.

Perhaps I'll take a stereo out (which I'm sure I must be able to get at some level) and all the individual channels (if it works) and between the two I can cobble together a decent enough mix...

We just want to document what we're doing without going to all the trouble of recording properly - when we do that, the repertoire suffers because it takes so long to do the recording... given that we're both employed full time, that is, and have only a night a week to do it...

And the other thing being that we (when I say we, I mean I) use a looper pedal a bit, and that's fundamentally a live thing...

I'll be putting it all into Yamaha AW4416, so there's enough channel ins on that to cope with what I'm trying to do.

I'll just have to get some generic stadium applause/crowd noise samples somewhere to make it sound like we're playing to 10,000 underwear throwing / screaming teens... ;)

But how to make them chant our band name in unison at the end of a song? :laughings:

You'll need Que cards. ARMISTICE ~ ARMISTICE ~ ARMISTICE ;)

You could get you some of these http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/DOC106/ which seem rediculously expensive to me or you can just use a regular TS 1/4" cable plugged in to the first click in the insert jack.

I usually do it the second way, but it's pretty shotty if you ask me (although I still do it). I've had tracks that didn't record because the cable came out just a little. And it's usually prefader, pre eq.

Or you could make your own cables. I think there's a thread around here that explains how to do it.

So did I give you a good answer or shall we discuse some more?

Or you could make your own cables. I think there's a thread around here that explains how to do it.

Insert tap:

Insert end, TRS connector with tip and ring soldered together and to the conductor of a shielded cable. Other end, TS connector, tip connected to the conductor. Shield to both sleeves.

I just use a standard unbalanced cable. I make spacer sleeves out of 1/4" inside-diameter auto fuel hose cut to 1/4" lengths. Slip them on the plugs at the insert end of the cables and they can't get pushed in too far. Some 1/4" sockets don't have enough grip at the ring contact to hold the plug in place. Use at your own risk.
