First thing you might want to do is define "jazz" as you mean it. From big band and classic jazz to smooth jazz and fusion, the music styles and band sizes vary widely, as do the recording and engineering needs and techniques.

What you might want to do would be to pick a representative artist of the style you're looking for - Ellington or Basie for classic/big band, Gillespie or Davis for Bop, Corea or the Mahavishnu for fusion, etc - and do a search for that artist and the word "recording" or "recording techniques", both on the net and on Amazon. Also possibly search the net by popular jazz record labels such as Blue Note, Verve or CTI and attach the same recording keywords.

Well find a reference cd with a sound similar to what you are looking for. Use that as your model. If you just completed an engineering course you should already have most of the basics.

Sorry to hijack the post, but I'm having trouble posting and cannot search. I can, for some odd reason reply w/o problems. Somebody help!!

Jazz, as someone said, varies widely...figure out what genre of jazz you're looking at, find a CD with the sound you want and go from there. I like fusion personally....BS&T anyone? :D

i understand where you goin, and i know what to do with it when it comes to analising the style of music. i was hoping i would get more info about recording techniques, setup in mics, and get it out of books or certain websites. i was not clear to that.

Our point is that recording techniques for one type of jazz are very different from those for another type. Recording the Mahavishnu Orchestra is a whole different ballgame from recording the Oscar Peterson Trio.

Asking "how do I record jazz" is almost as vague as asking "how do I record music". You need to narrow down the type of jazz you're referring to, otherwise it's too big of a question.

Isn't this a redundant post? There's another on in "microphones"
