Recording Drums

I've got the option of recording drums in a:
10 x 10 (8-Foot Ceiling Parallel To Floor) all drywall.

or

20 x 14 (12 Foot "A-Frame" Vaulted Ceiling) also drywall.

Now... neither of these rooms are empty,
The 10 x 10 is my computer/band room...
The 20 x 14 is my family room.

I would be well advised to record drums in the 20 x 14 right?

Does it make a huge difference where in the room? Is the center ok?
 
Yes, by all means go for the bigger room. The 10x10x8 room will be an acoustic nightmare.

It will take experimentation as to where to position the drums. Then where to position the mics. You may have to move some furniture around to eliminate standing wave issues and add some sort of absorbtion and something to reduce resonance. Take your time. Make sure the drums sound good in the room before putting up any mics. Then experiment with mic placement.

You didn't say what mics you had. I always start with a dynamic in the kick, a snare mic, a couple of overheads, and one for the room. Then if I can't get a balanced sound, I'll start adding close mics to the toms, hat, and such.

Thanks for the tips... I'll have a play.
I have some budget mics to use.
A Samson Q-Kick Large Diaphragm Dynamic.
An Audiotechnica Kit-Pak of 3 snare/tom mics and 1 tom/kick mic.
And a condensor.

I am actually recording smaples, for fun really,
And to have in case I need to do any replacements on my drummers tracks.

So, I'll not be using a full mic setup all the time.
 
Sweet. Post some samples when you're done. If you can. I'd like to hear them.
 
Will do bud. I've got some samples from the small room...
They don't sound TOO bad, but they don't sound good...
