So..

christmas break comming up..
2 bands want tro record with me

got the Beta 52 on its way...

any they both dont have holes in their bass drum

how sould i would around this..

i got

Beta 52
(3)SM57
MXl 603
and Behri XM8500

what should i do for the bass?

Umm...
1-Put the 52 in front of the drum, you don't have to have a hole.
2-Tell them to get a new head.
3-Take the front head off.

Just some ideas.

ive said, get a new head.. and they dont want to.. or dont have the money to..

will taking off the head have the same sound?

It all depends...

...on the sound they are going for. What style of music do the bands play?

no, it won't. but then again, if the hole in the front head is one of the "large" variety (ie: you can fit a pillow through it), there's really no difference in having that front head on there or not.

i personally like the sound of a double-headed kick. it's a deeper low--more boomy and resonant, and less punchy/slappy.

of course, the easy answer is: do a take with the front head on, and then another with it off and see which you and the bands like best. in the end, it's what fits the song best that matters most.

cheers,

you can always cut a whole in thier bass drum heads just use like a compass to get a perfect circle

just an idea

if it was softer bass stuff i would worrie about having the head on..

but its more rock.. heavy stuff..

chairs, and mic stands, lined up in front of the drum with blankets draped over them, to make a tunnel in front of the drum

Use a cheap plastic garbage can and cut a hole in the bottom of it.

And make sure you have their permission before you do such a thing...

If theyre ok with it you can stick a larger size tin can on top of your electric burner. Get it pretty hot then burn an air hole right through the head.

I know this sounds ghetto as fuck , but it worked for me once so... :o :D

You're right that does sound ghetto as fuck...... Did you not burn the crap out of yourself with the tin can?

Potholders baby! HaHa!
:D
Whatever works!

:D ha ha :D

I tend to do some "creative" things with my gear as well....... I'm building a "fort" to put my drums in to record. It's basically a lot of curtain rods that sleeping bags are going to hang down from. And across the top of "the fort" I'm going to try to pull some sleeping bags tight across......... I used to love playing fort as a kid, and I can't afford to treat my room. But, I think 3 dollar military surplus sleeping bags are doable.

Talk about d.i.y. :D

kool...i just had that same idea 3 days ago...my kit's in a basement with a suspended ceiling, so i could just squeeze some sheets through the supports...it gets real cozy in there and you don't ever really feel like leaving...other than that the sound is just sooooo different...sounds like you're playing a 1 inch X 1 inch kit inside a dice
