Could someone give me some advice on doing this? I realize I'd have to mix back into the 4-track to two tracks if I want stereo and one mono but I was wondering how others did it and what they did for EQ, mic placement, etc.

Depends on the situation. If I am doing a full blown production, I'll close mic the snare, ride toms, and floor toms, plus an overhead for the cymbals. These are all SM 57s except the overhead, I use my only condenser mic, an AT 3035. These go into my PA head, which doubles as my outboard mixer and phantom power supply, panned into a stereo out into two channels (usually 2&3)of my Portastudio 464. I use a cheap dynamic mic in the kick drum, straight into ch 1, so to use the insert jack into a compressor. Sorry guys, I ain't rich. If I have other musicians in the "studio" (my wife calls it the garage, but she don't know) they get the remaining inputs of the 464 direct in. But usually I do all the parts of my demos myself.

All this is printed to two tracks to get the stereo. Then you have two more to make the song "whole".
