Recording distorted guitars

Thanks for all your points, I don't consider crate is a bad amp, but hey, I haven't tried much different amps either, so i'll get to hear some more equipment and try to get a better sound before the mic, and then try some action with a SM57, which I think will do much better than the behringer.
 
Who ever thinks Crate has ANY quality behind a guitar tone ESPECIALLY for metal probably were also a fan of the zoom digital peddles in the late 90's
I can't take someone serious if their main rig is crate. For practice? Yea ok but my god there is SO much better tone for if not just as equal cost as crate but even less

Crate made a blue voodoo cabinet that came stock with vintage 30s (and legit v30s, not some re branded shit like marshall uses on the 1960V stuff), all the hardware was metal, and the cab was constructed out of birch plywood (I think it weighs roughly 85 pounds).

This was pretty much the only thing I can think of that was made by crate that was quality. The cab model was the BV412SV

the little Crate Palamino amps were pretty cool. The V5 was a very nice sounding 5 watter.
But that solid state dreck is horrible.
 
I agree with both of the main points being expressed here. Yeah, with your setup, you're pretty much always gonna sound like shit if you're aiming for a modern distorted guitar tone. Your gear will never compete with good stuff. But that doesn't mean don't try. Play with the mic positioning and gain and see what happens.

I've never used a POD, but don't they come with speaker simulation? Running one through an amp seems counterproductive. You'll probably sound better going direct from the POD.

They also made a "vintage" series around the same time that included a compact 4x12 with real Vintage 30's. Apparently Joe Walsh used them. I doubt he does any more.

I had both the Blue Voodoo and the vintage stuff and it all sucked balls. Blue Voodoo's top endorsee was Marty Friedman of Megadeth, remember? Ha ha, and the amps, while being all tube, had little orange LED lights behind the tubes to give the impression of "warmth" or whatever you wanna call it. I hate marketing crap like that.

It was all bollocks and was the worst tube gear I ever heard.

I also remember crate putting out that crazy BV300H through a cab that had 9 or something 12" speakers inside haha.

I still say that cab wasn't bad at all.

I gotta back you on this one. I have the BV cab, and tho it's nothing stellar, it's LIGHT YEARS ahead of most other Crate garbage. I've done a few A/B comparisons with a low end Crate, a Randall something or other, and a Marshall something or other. my cab can hold it's own. the only thing I really dislike about it is the weight. it's GOTTA be 80lbs or more!




...but I got it for $100
 
Guys, I gota say. I'm also very depressed after buying the line 6 POD FARM. for distorted sounds it's so not even NEAR as good as it's competition. Now clean and effects sound? It destroyes everyone else but I look at effects as a necessay evil mostly. Is any one here familiar... I mean has really heard peavy's amp simulation? Enough to stamp a honest judgement? Cuz I'm probably going to swing agin like I did with line 6 poop farm. Hoping for home run. What I did read about peavy is crazy how detail u can get with it.... Changing the Diodes!? Damn!
 
Not a fan of Revalver. Right now I'm likeing amplitube 3 the most.

Which is saying a lot because I thought amplitube 2 sucked.

POD's have a switch on em that lets you select if you're running it into an amp, or direct into whatever. The 'direct' setting adds the speaker sims, the 'amp' setting just send the signal as-is.

I have a BV-120 head that actually sounds pretty good imo. I'm not pushing it thru a crate cab tho :D It came stock with shitty tubes but if you put something different in it, it makes a huge difference. I never heard a solid state crate amp I liked.
