I have a long commute, so I'm interested in recording the music channels on DirecTV for playback in the car.

I want to buy the stereo component type of CD recorder. I've heard that these recorders can tell if you're recording from a commercial CD. Can they also tell if you're recording from DirecTV and prevent the recording? I don't want to buy the recorder if I can't use it for this purpose. Please advise.

Thanks,

little donkey:

I guess no one here is really familiar with recording from direcTV; I know I'm not, but I'll take a stab at it. My guess is that if a CD recorder can recognize a commercial CD, it is somehow identifying the .cda file format and locking you out based on that. Seems like the powers-that-be in direcTV land would be more concerned with those trying to dupe video AND audio as opposed to just audio. I could be way off base, though.

The recording protection schemes you mention only apply to a digital signal. With a decent HiFi VCR getting your signal, the audio line outs should provide a fairly clean analog source signal, with which you can do what you want. Digital signals are of course the cleaner route, but if you're playing it back on a car stereo, I don't think this shortfall will be noticeable.
