Anyone done this? Is it best to record inside the thing or in front of it? Should I use a ld condensor, a sd condensor, or a dynamic? I have mxl603's, a sp b3, a sm57, and a mxl v67, but I have a beta 52 on the way. Any suggestions?

The MXL 603 should do a fine job. Try placing it about 12 to 18" in front of the end of the dij, about 12" to the side.

It will still pick up a lot of the mouth sounds, but you can mix in a second mic located very close to the player's mouth if desired. I don't do that because I like the tone of the mouth sounds coming through the pipe.

I usually place the player in the corner with a floor cushion and several back cushions.

It's very weird - I'm in the middle of North Texas, and I've done 3 digeridoo sessions.

You might wanna patch in a parametric equalizer and boost some bottom end to taste.

i have recorded countless didges and i have used a d112 or an at 4033. i place the mic in the front a few inches back off the bell and do a little eqing and thats it. if you have a good player that has a good didge than its all about picking a mic and its placement. i would try your b3 or 603.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm recording it next week. I'll let you know how it goes.

I've used my Rode NT-3 for the same purpose. Depending on the tone of the Dig, I'll vary the exact distances, but 12" or closer from the end, and off center (4-8") has worked for me pretty well.

Good to hear that others appreciate a nice Dig sound!

the didge is one of my favorite things to record as well as native american plains flute. very relaxing.
i would try putting your beta 52 on it too.

I would be happy to tell you how well a KSM44 works with a digeridoo, but I can't. BECAUSE I CAN'T GET MY DIDGE TO MAKE A FREAKING SOUND!!

I've had the damned thing for two years and I can't make any noise come out of it.

Oops, sorry. This probably belongs in the "Circular Breathing Rejects" thread.

Just make sure he is sitting down. I saw a guy try and play one standing once, and he passed out. Kinda funny, after he woke up.

I'll most likely be recording him in the bathroom, sitting on the toilet......playing the didg, that is. Now where was that 'recording ass plops' thread?:D
