I'm going to be recording a demo and I have about a year to get the equipment and learn. I play black metal so the as you might know the end result does not have to be crystal clear but i'd still like some decent results. Basically what i'm looking for is to be able to record instruments and vocals into a computer instead of a 4 track. As you may know this brings up many problems such as distortion of the signal by crappy soundcards(I have a soundblaster live).

Basically, is there a way to be able to do quality recordings through a computer. Soundcards, mixers? Please tell me how I can achieve this and still maintain the quality of recording through a 4 track. I've done both before and I much prefer mixing and recording to a computer. I'd say my budget is about 500$ but if that's unrealistic i'd be willing to go over.

Two good condensers (so you can do the drums in stereo) and a two-channel preamp. This will set you back around $500, so then you can get n-track, which is a cheap and supposedly very good HD recording software.

hmm

Thanks...Can you be more specific with brands and such?

Depending on your location $500-1000 will go a lot farther buying time at a project studio then it will buying equipment. Realistically $3-5K is a good budget just for a mediocre setup.

Even if you get software, pres and mics for under a grand you still need a soundcard, headphones, monitors and cables. That's another grand or two easily.

I'm not trying to discourage you but just being realistic.

If you have a year, I can guarantee you that the gear available will be quite different if not outstanding 12 months from now.

The spin on gear is between 40 and 60 days; just check the ads in EM each month. Chips get better, bits get larger, manuals stay the same, sound gets better.

Probably mics will stay kind of level; however, I predict a mic in the future that will digitally adjust input and produce sounds right down to whiskers rubbing against one another while the lips move.

For girls, hair follicles bumping against one another.

The future in sound is "unlimited."

I agree with TexRoadkill. You might want to save up a little bit more money, if you can....... :(

But............. if all you'll have is $500.00 then we'll make somrthing work for you.

peace....

Svarog13.......

The thirteen and the $500 budget make me suspect that this kid is either thirteen or a teenager in general. The $3500 plan is not gonna cut it for a teenager in a year unless illegal substances are involved or the fam is loaded. I would suggest something like... A M-Audio 24/96 or Echo Mia a couple of good inexpensive overheads like the Oktava MC012. They go used on Ebay for a couple of hundred. A much hated and often trashed Behringer mixer should give you 4 preamps. MX802 is the number I think. Of course if you wanna do vocals you will have to go about 80 bucks over budget. Something like a SM57 shoud get you started. Will this make a good CD??? Ummmm hmmmmmm I will get back to you on that. Will it allow you to RECORD a cd? YUP..... Will it sound like your cd was recorded on more than a $500 setup? Hmmmm thats hard to do when you only have a $500 setup. You should be able to keep everything in the mix for a while except the mixer....at some point you will probably wanna upgrade your mixer/preamps. This way....you have only "wasted" a hundred bucks. The 57 can be used on other stuff and sound good.......the MC012's are said to be decent budget overheads. This is my evaluation....... Of course if you want better sound you will have to spend more money...........

Peace

HAH! Don't draw conclusions so easily my friend. Svarog is a smith god in slavic mythology and paganism. The 13 simply symbolises the 13 slavic countries. (I am Russian)

As for the 500$ thing, I do not know the prices, as I said I can adjust to whatever budget, I am certainly not 13, nor a teenager
