Mixing and Mastering.
Been trying to record a bass amp. just a shitty peavey. Have been using an AKG D112 mic and getting ok results, but would it be worth my while using an SM58 at the same time or maybe a different mic? The sound i get is very bassy even with the amp eq set to a high frequency setting. Yeah the bassy sound is what i want as it is meaty, but i just dont get the clean crisp tone of the higher notes. They are quite quiet. Could it be the bass player or could it be the mic?
I tried to use a bass pod into the amp, but didnt get good results atall. I know it is good to use a DI at the same time as the mic but couldnt seem to get the DI working. Does it need phantom power or something?
Any help would be greatly apreciated.
Cheers.

Just as you use a mic with mellow response to capture a bright sound source, you might consider trying a mic with a bright response to capture a boomy sound source. Try the 58, or engage a low cut on the D112.

It seems the amp and speaker combo just doesn't put out much highs. You could try pointing the mic at the centre of the cone, or going directly into the board from the POD. Make sure the volume and tone controls on the bass guitar are maxed, as well. If you bass player can use a pick, try that, too. The high end on a single speaker bass cabinet doesn't put out any actually highs, more high mids, so a mic that picks up mids well might help. Still, I think the best solution is direct from the POD ;-)

cheers. I prefer the amp solution to the pod solution, but pod does work, just not the best. I really need an ampeg valve amp to get a real dirty but clean as hell sound with lots of bass and tonnes of tone! but that aint gonna happen (yet). i will try the 58 and see the outcome.
ta much.
