I need to record a show, about 3 bands, probably around 3 hours long. The sound guy there said i can have a left/right output. What type of device should i use? DAT? plus help me out.

Sounds about right to me. I don't suppose you'd want to lug your computer all the way down there. :D

Seriously, though, if you can get your hands on something like an ADAT with a shitload of inputs, you could ask the sound guy if you could record each of the instruments/tracks separately to your recorder through the Channel Inserts of his board.

That might be more trouble than what it's worth, depending on how good you need this recording to be.

I already went down that road, had 2 adats lined up :) but the bastard sound guy refused it, said something like the amount of power will fry it and he doesn't want to reroute all his inputs and such. Oh well I can't say much, he will talk to other venues.

check out what its for.

any recommendation on the dat, or are dats worth it, i want the highest i can use, which is 24bits 48k

If you're just going straight out of the board, then the quality of a/d isn't going to make or break it. Just rent whatever you can get a hold of that's cheap and convenient.

Ah i see your in one corner of the "golden triangle" of texas heh
A LONG TIME i was in a band and a sound guy ganked a board mix of one of our songs with a mini disc player....not as high tech as you wanted but might do in a pinch...
Now "ADAT"s AFAIK, are all 20bit.....
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2500607003&category=15199 this is a DAT thats 24 bit, though it claims to be the only 24 bit one (who knows its ebay) You may wanna consider an ADAT for compatibility reasons, IE transfering/moving tapes instead of the whole unit all the time
20bit really isnt all that bad. Im confused about the sound guy talking about the amount of power frying something....Frying what? his board? your adat? I saw your website and looked where your recording.....heh ive dealt with him before, sounds like hes just being lazy (assuming its a guy whos name starts with J =P)

i use to record our band using Sony DTCA7 which is 16 bit and the sound came out great when the sound man AND his gear was great, and it came out crappy when the sound man OR his gear was crappy.

i used 120 minute tapes

I surprisingly had great luck with four tracks...old analog at that....
I used to run the left right out of the board and then I threw two more mics left/right over the rafters about 20 feet in from the house speakers. It added a whole new/live effect as what you hear is usually mixed for sounding great out of the mains and not for straight to tape. came out with unbelievable stereo live presence as you get the room acoustics and crowd noise as well.

AHAHAHAHAHA, thats great. Ok i honestly not famlier with live setups so i'll just believe what ever he says. I found a dat for sell, $150, great deal, going to buy it test it first make sure it still sounds good, then use that. Only down side is it is unbalance RCA plugs :( oh well. What can you expect.
