Hi guys,

I need to record a drums with the most natural sound possible... the band is looking for country/ballad sound, for example, like Ryan Adams

So, what will be your set up with this mic looker??

Audio Technica:
2 AT4050 CM5
1 AT4047
1 AT4040
1 AE3000
1 ATM25

Shure:
2 KSM 141
1 Beta 91
1 Beta 87
1 Beta 57
1 Beta 52
3 Beta 98
3 Sm 57
1 Sm 58

Thanks Guys !!!

I have not used all of these mics, But I would try the Beta52 on kick, Beta 57 or sm57 on snare, KSM141 as overheads. I don't usually mic up more than this on a kit.

Also, for the miking setup I suggested, you need a good sounding balanced kit, and a musically sensitive drummer (not a 'beater') as you don't have the ability to control EQ and level of each individual piece of the kit at mixdown.

As always, get the overheads sounding good, then get the snare cracking and bass thumping, because as stated you won't have a ton of control over the individual sounds. Ryan Adams, depending on the album, just has a pretty basic rock sound. Check out Greg's sticky in the drum forum for some great tips.

I always try to get the overheads first, then snare and kick, and that's all I use. If you wanna, you can put your two extra 57s on the toms to help with the stereo spread. And a 4050 as a room mic if your room sounds good. I like to keep it simple because I'm not that great, but also because that older drum sound (like ryan adams has) is usually 4 mics and an optional room mic.

So... Should i use the ksm 141 (cardioid or omni?) instead at4050 for overheads?

and i was thinking in using the at4047 FOK, what you think?

I'd put the 52 inside the kick and the 4047 on the front kick reso head.

Just do a setup and make a test recording, then do another setup and test it. rinse, repeat. You gotta experiment with your gear.
