recording 2+tracks at the same time

I have been having trouble recording multiple tracks on my yamaha 8-track. It's an anolog recorder.
I have tried everything, so I'm gunna write exactly what I have been doing.
If I want to record drums I will set up a mic for the snare and hi hat. That will be track 1.
A kick drum mic will be track 2.
And a mic over the ride and low toms will be track 3.
I press in the ASSN1-2 for track on and pan to the left.
I press the ASSN1-2 for track 2 and pan to the right.
I press the ASSN 3-4 for track 3 and pan to the left.
I press the mic/line for each track.
I press the mon sel. 1-3 and 2-4.
I set all the levels in a sound check and all three tracks peak the way they should. And when I record, all the tracks peak the way they should. But when I go to play back, one track does not work. In the case above, the first track does not play back. Why? Please help me.

I am assuming that you have an 8 track tape recorder, like the Tascam 488 only you have a Yamaha.

I am sure you have a manual that is as ambiguous as most manuals, even for Yamaha.

But, here is what I did when I recorded on my old 488:

You can input whatever mics you want to whatever channels; but, leave the pan knobs straight up and listen in through the cans and see what you get? You can always pan left/right when you mix down for effects that you like.

If you are recording two/three tracks at once, you have to put them into CUE mode, I think for your unit, when you record the 4th/5th etc. track (s).

You don't need to worry about volume in the CUE mode; once you've recorded a track and you are OVER-DUBBING, the CUE mode is only a listening arena; when you get all the tracks done, you put them all into PLAY BACK mode and then you tweak your tracks as your ears dictate. Then, you do a mix to DAT or Tape or CD or whatever.

That's the DNA and Skeletal facts of over-dubbing.

Good luck, consult your manual or get Yamaha on the line.

But, I'll tell you from experience, the techie who answers you from Yamaha will be an engineer and they still talk in double talk.

Is it always the first track that doesn't play back?

track one dosnt play back when I push the ASSN1-2 for tracks 1 and 2. And the ASSN3-4 for track 3.
When I push the ASSN1-2 for track 1 and ASSN3-4 for tracks 2 and 3, then track 2 does not play back.
Like I said, they were all reaponding(according to the EQ for each track) when the actual recording was occuring, but the playback was missing a track.
