Hello,

I've just finished recording a new song titled "I Don't Know What To Say". You can find it here. It should begin playing automatically.

Let's see, some recording notes about this one.

Vocals -> Studio Projects C1 -> PreSonus FirePod
Acoustic Guitars: Takamine FD-360sc -> matched pair of MXL 603s's (x/y config.) -> firepod
Electric Guitars: PRS SE Soapbar II -> Line6 GuitarPort
Bass: Dean Bass -> SWR combo (using direct out to firepod)
Drums: Loops from Drums on Demand

I used cubase.

I think this one came out relly nice. I appreciate any comments. Thanks!

Very nice. Nice song, nice tune, nice melody, nice voice, nice mix. Great vocal sound. I'm just not crazy about the drums. They're certainly not bad by any means, but everythig else is at such a high standard that I notice the drums being a little weak compared to everything else. Would love to hear this with a real drummer. Great job.

Nice tune. Comments edited to conserve space on server.

I really like the song. I also sort of like the simplicity of how the vocals are done. They're not yelled or too low. They're just spoken-sung (if that's a word). They tell a story and also have a somewhat live performance feel to them while the music behind has a very well-polished sound. That's how it sounds to me.

Really really love the intro lead guitar sound. I could never get that on mine. :)

Something about the sound of your music says Lisa Loeb. I don't know what. She's also from Texas. And I think she's cool. So that's a compliment. :)

I also really like Something Better. I haven't heard other songs but I like these two :)

Wow, thanks for the compliments, everybody. I really appreciate it.

"I Don't Know What To Say" was written about 5 years ago (I think). I've recorded it a number of times, but I finally worked out how I wanted all the guitars and the arrangement, and did a final recording.

The latest song I've written is called "It Covers Me", which I think is my favorite recorded song thus far, but "I Don't Know What To Say" turned out really good - better than I ever thought it would sound. It's strange how some songs end up being good when you think they won't.

"Something Better" is about to get a major overhaul. I really don't like the electric guitars, and I've written some new parts for it which will make it sound a bit different.

I've got a buddy of mine playing the bass parts for me now (I can't take credit for it - there is some really good bass stuff in these songs). Now I just need to find a drummer and a lead guitar player, and I can move out of the realm of the one-man-band.

Barry, thanks for the compliment about the site. I'm using Mambo, which is a PHP-based content management system. If you are interested, shoot me a PM or email and I'll tell you a bit about it - it sounds hard, but it's really easy once you get the hang of it, and really powerful. I'll check out your MySpace site once I get to a computer with speakers.

Again, thank you to everybody for the response so far.

Very cool, man, sounds very good. Especially the acoustic sound. Your voice and singing style remind me a lot of Staind, which you may or may not take as a compliment. :D Those ending vocal harmonies are really cool, too. I like. :)

Thanks!

Whenever I do an open mic night or anything like that, I play a little "Outside" by Staind - so yes, I take that as a compliment.

Sounds great. It's hard to believe the amount of talented unsigned acts now, also the amount of people that are great sound engineers that do it as a hobby. The acoustic is the beginning sounds so full, sounds great... I'll give it a third on this, sounds great.

Thanks a lot!

That acoustic is a Takamine FD-360sc mic'd with a matched pair of MXL 603s's (which cost me about $150) in an x/y config. straight into a firepod. I guess I said that stuff in the original post. Anyway, to me, its amazing the quality of recording you can get with "budget" gear. I mean, the total cost of all the mic's used in this recording is $300 (mxl's and the studio projects C1), and the interface (firepod) was about $550. A the GuitarPort was about $80 on ebay, and the software came with the firepod. What's that - way less than $1000 in recording equipment to get this song? I guess that doesn't include the instruments, but my electric guitar was $330. The acoustic was a bit pricier, though, and the bass setup was a friend's. Anyway, I'm going on and on. You can do a lot on a budget these days. And, if you have a bit of patience and are willing to do a bit of reading and experimenting, you can have great results with sound engineering. I definately owe my knowledge to websites like these and other information out there that's free for the taking.
