Recommendations for a decent analog setup!!?

That Studer is really something else,...

definitely a great piece of pro gear, and I don't think you'll find one cleaner than that! I wouldn't doubt if this Studer 2"/24-track gets top dollar in resale.

On the used analog recording market, price and condition varies greatly from item to item, but the savvy Ebayer can make some great deals on some excellent equipment, a good portion of it being low-use, mint-condition gear. However, you have to do your homework before buying any used piece of gear, and as always, buyer beware.

PS: Currently, the 1"/24-track Tascam MSR-24 has dropped into the $2500 price range, with the MSR-24S [DolbyS] model getting a few hundred more in resale. Home recordists like me can have an MSR-24 [or Fostex G24S] at that price, but I think the 2"/24-track is a little less common as a piece of home recording gear. I'm sure there are a few, but you'll see more 2" machines going into home studios as the price drops, steadily over time.

I only had to wait 15 years for an eight track. I hope it's sooner than that for 2" 24 track.
 
hey, there are some closings and bankruptcies going on...for around 3k you could get a 2" 24 track, but most likely without any SOPHISTICATED autolocator...Ill post some links as soon as I can remember the names. If you are ready to put in a little effort and some tech work, this could be right up your alley
 
Oh the effort and technical ability is always there. It's the wallet that is lacking.

It will be quite some time before I have a machine of that caliber rolling around on this studio floor.

reel person....yeah it is a very clean and sophisticated piece of gear indeed and I saw a couple of Studers on ebay too, but my problem is that most of the sellers are from the States, and I live in Australia....on Australian ebay site there's not many (in fact none when I checked last time) multitracks, but there are several good second hand shops, where I hope I can score a decent deal...
BTW, probably stupid question but, what is the real difference between 1" and 2" machine, but with the same number of tracks??

Less than half the track width. You have to take in consideration the track separation bands.

In other words the track width is not going to be twice as narrow, it's going to be MORE than twice as narrow because of the guard bands between tracks.
 
The serious answer:

the 2", with it's wider track width, gives more headroom and less crosstalk than the 1", and so on, down through the narrower track formats.
 
thanx....the head room issue did come to mind, (I thought the wider tape the more "bash" it can take), but I admit ...never thought about crosstalk, separation bands etc...what a great place to learn...thanx again..:)
 
Tape speed also has an effect on headroom. The faster it moves across the heads the more headroom you have for the given format, or tape width. 15IPS vs 30IPS.
 
Does anybody buy tape?

Two inches at 30 ips is a little under $8 per minute. Record some tones, record multiple takes, leave space between takes, and it gets a bit expensive.
 
I buy tape. My studio would be pretty worthless without it.

Er, um - OK - nobody seems to have mentioned anything about the maintenance of analogue machines. They're really only as good as how well they're maintained (cleaning, alignment, calibration). In this digital-age, when everything is so "Press-the-button", "Click-the-Mouse", "Drag-This", Drag-That"...

I don't mean to pour water on your enthusiasm, but there's considerably more to analogue than watching the reels whizz around, cool as that might be...

...by the way, how are you with a razor-blade and splicing-tape?

thanks Wil...yeah I know that it's not all so easy, indeed I know very little...
This place is a great place to learn and thats why we're all here....but thanks for reminding me of the "fun bits" as well:D ..I haven't forgotten them....but I hope I can learn as much as possible..

Maintenance. Get to know your machine inside and out. Lots of moving parts, they need regular cleaning and an alignment every now and then. Belts can fail, as can motors. Pinch rollers have to be replaced occasionally, lots of cleaning to be performed before, during, and after each and every session. I love it.

There is a Tascam MSR 16 in the Melbourne Trading Post paper for sale 2$1700 aus-a good buy.I'm a happy MSR user and they're great-not 2' but Beulah made a great cd on one and whartien tiers did Dinasaur junior and sonic Youth -what more?
Also,Mick wordlye has one for sale (or more) @ www.mixmasters.com.au in adelaide-a great guy to deal with for all things studio.Good luck.
 
Many good albums have been recorded on the TASCAM eight and 16 track recorders.

No, it's not 2" but it's pretty damn good for what it is.
