Recommend any speakers??

Hey my fellow audiophiles~

Our church is looking for speakers. Either active or passive. If I am going for passive I'm trying to figure out if we need to upgrade the amp we currently have.

It'll be used in our cafeteria, and occasional church outings and retreat. Probably for about 200-250 people.(or can max out at 400 some times)

I have the EV Q66 (not the new silver version but the older one with the blue writing). Should I buy speakers that match that amp or should I actually upgrade both the amp the speakers? OR just simplify it and get active speakers?

For all those options, can you guys recommend me some brands and products?

We need more info. What exactly do you plan on running through these speakers? One microphone? A full rock band?

Someone told me the exact same thing. "More Info"

I already have a mixer. 8 channel Yamaha or an 16ch Allen & Heath (But that has to be fixed since all fuse we place gets burnt.. grr). That with a power conditioner, compressor, eq (I think we have a rack) and the said EV Q66 amplifier. This is the older Q66 so it's not 900w but 2 x 600w.

This is for multipurpose use. Either in our cafeteria which can hold about 200 folks or outdoors or a retreat center where the room size will vary. But as number of people goes, it could max at around 350 - 400.

In our cafeteria it will be mainly used for vocal but the other times occasional bands. But if we bring this system to a retreat center, it will be for a full band (keys, vocals, guitar, and MAYBE drums if I decide to get a sub)

I was looking for a pair of active speakers to make life easy but since I already have an amp with a mixer I wanted to see what my options are with what I currently own. Someone recommended me the Yamaha Club Series (2-way 12" (SM12V) and one or two subs. Of course then I'll have to purchase another amp to power those subs).

My budget is around ~1600 give or take. Yea.. don't have that much room to play with but if those SM12V speakers work with my amp, I'll have about 900 extra to spend on the subs and amp. But if anyone can convince me otherwise to go with an active speaker, I'm all ears :) (Don't want to go TOO cheap of a route since I want it to last.)

Passive speakers are the way to go. The Yamaha Club Series is an excellent choice. I've used the SM115 speakers for many years. They can be used as monitors or pole mounted mains. A pair of those with a pair of subs will handle a full band as long as you don't skimp on the power amps. Get the most powerful amps that you can afford.
 
I shall go with those, then. Any recommendation on the subs and the amp for the subs? So you are saying that those yamaha either the 12 or the 15 will work with my current amp, correct? Apologies, I'm very noob at these :)

Am I correct in thinking that the SM12V is the one I should be getting?
 
It depends on how you run the amp. In stereo @ 8ohms per side the amp produces 380 watts. That would be ok for someone speaking to a group. For a full band you would need to run the amp in bridged mono which gives you 1800 watts into 4 ohms. You want as much wattage as you can get to provide headroom so you can run the gain on the board lower resulting in a cleaner sound. If you use too low wattage of an amp you have a better chance of causing damage to the speakers because of distortion.
As for subs a pair of Yamaha SW118V would be fine. You will also need a crossover if you are going to run subs.

Ah, so one can choose which ohms to use on the amp? I haven't checked the back of the amp to see what knobs are back there. I didn't know what bridged mode is. :) Still a bit confusing as to what the max wattage and what ohms are optimal for what usage but for now, your explanation will do. Haha.

If I want to save money and get a powered subwoofer how would I connect it to the mixer? Aux? RCA? (I guess that question remains even if I were to get an amp.)

The ohms is determined by how many speakers are used and how they are wired.
To run a powered sub you run the main outs of the mixer into a crossover and the low outs of the crossover into the sub. The rest of the frequencies are sent out the mid or high outs of the crossover to the amps that power your horns and mids.
 
Wow. So much involved in this. Haha

I'm seeing that that crossover is NECESSARY in any system if I want to add a sub. With these information I think I can try to venture on my own. I really appreciate your advice and will let you know how it goes :)

As of now, I need a pair of passive speakers, crossover, [amp and a sub (single for now)] or an active sub.
