Recent Mix.

I just got done recording / mixing a local metalcore band called A Murder Divine. They put the songs up (not mastered) on their Myspace. I wanted you guys to check them out. I know Myspace is a shitty streamed quality but you can still get the idea.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Kick: AKG D112, credit card taped to beater head (didn't like doing this too much), front head completely off. Mic about 8 inches from beater, pointed away from snare.

Snare: SM57, inch above top head.

Toms: Audix F10's, 2 inches above.

Overheads: R0DE NT5's, X/Y placement.

Guitars: SM57, outside of cone (they did not want to turn their distortion down one bit, haha.)

Bass: Line in trough Firepod.

Vocals: SM57, with windscreen, badly placed so it didn't work too well. I learned proper windscreen placement 3 days after I tracked the vocals.

Mixed in Cubase, using the built-in plug-in's / EQ in Cubase LE.

Hey Adam, I probably won't be much help as this really isn't a genre I listen to (never really been able to groove on that demonic chanting stuff), but I thought I'd let you know I took a listen, and give a little feedback anyhow. Biggest thing i noticed is the snare drum sound seems wrong, sounds more like a block of wood then a snare drum (is that common with this genre?). Also the timing seemed off between the drummer and guitars and it seems like it could use more consistency in the drums, maybe even it out with some compression? I did really like the guitar tones - reminds me of the old Iron Maiden stuff. Keep at it - I'm sure the devils and demons will appreciate the effort!

The snare drum was the hardest thing for me to work with. The kids tuning was way shitty on the snare drum and his head was beaten to shit. I added EQ to get a little better sound; Believe it or not it sounded way worse than that. It sounded like someone tapping their knuckle against glass before. Still does a little, but not that bad. I'm not satisfied with the snare, but I added compression / EQ, and that's the best I could get it. I NEED DRUMAGOG! Ha. The timing was off, but I haven't ventured into fixing drum timing, not there yet. I don't know if Cubase has anything liek Beat Detective, or something along those lines, but if I knew how I would try to fix it. The drummer wasn't very solid, but he was alright. I was actually more satisfied with the drum sound than the guitars. I've been a hard critique on myself for guitar tones, I think no matter what I do it sounds unclear and muddy. Thanks for the feedback though man, I definitely appreciate it. =)

This is actually really not bad at all, yeah, the only thing that sounds bad is the snare, but I know exactly how it is in that situation, there's only so much you can do.

Also, I would've mixed the guitars louder or vocals lower, but that's personal preference.

You're the same adam on airbag that says 'take care', right?

p.s. what kind of drum kit was it?
 
Yes, I am the same Adam, haha. I didn't know anyone from Vegas posted on here? What's your name on Airbag? As for the kit, I forgot what it was. I think it was a Pearl, not completely sure about that though. And about the guitars / vocals, I made the vocals louder because the guitarists' were playing kind of sloppy, and I thought the vocals were the cleanest thing on the recording; I can see why you would have done it differently though. Thanks for the feedback though, dude. =)

My airbag name is hungbyhalos.
I think it was a regular pearl export too, from looking at their page, in which case, very well done, toms sound really good.
I could tell it was a little sloppy, but you can always say "do it again" ;)
They'll usually thank you later.

Time was not on either of our sides. I have to record out of my house (still live with parents) and they don't like too much noise for too long. Also, the band wanted it done pretty quickly. They said the tracks sounded fine on playback, but it wasn't during overdubbing, haha. Oh well. Thanks for the feedback dude. I always see you on airbag, I didn't know you were into recording. What have you recorded that I might know?

I feel you on that, I live with my parents too.

I started recording myself just out of boredom and neccessity, and then decided "if i'm going to record, I might as well do it as best I can." So I recently upgraded my setup and everything, and haven't put out anything using it yet, but you can listen to my older recordings (which I think you've heard before) at http://www.myspace.com/cairparavel. They were all done 1-4 years ago with a microkorg, single sm58 into my soundcard, cool edit pro, and no effects, haha.

edit: in case you didn't catch that, they were also done before I developed that "...as best I can" philosophy.

Haha, that's pretty cool dude. That stuff isn't bad at all, i'm just more into complete band recording. What setup are you running through now?

I'm running ableton live now, using a studio projects b1, a blue kickball, and few 58s, into a soundcraft compact10 mixer, into a delta 1010LT, to ableton, with a bunch of new plugins. I also built a DIY electric drumkit to record with, and got a bunch of other instruments just to get the sounds I want.

The main quality difference that comes from my new recordings is mostly because I've developed my tracking and mixing technique, and also because all my tracks used to be saved to 256k mp3s, 16 bit (I never really noticed).
As soon as I started doing non-compressed files, it got much better, and then I moved up to 24-bit, so it's pretty nice now.

I'm going to record my band, Hung By Halos, sometime within the month, I might post it here either if something goes wrong, or if it goes right.
