right ive taken into account everything about where you record/when you record blah blah etc etc but there still must be a prefered mic for recording really heavy stuff, i really need some guidance :)

any reccomendations for a good mic which will make distorted guitars sound really nice, iv used an interface and amplitube and loads of plugins for my guitars before but i mean, its pretty 'unreal' sounding if you get me, so i thought its time to go out and spend maybe $150 on a condenser for those distorted tones!:)

xx

agree i tried those amp simulation programs such as amplitube and guitar rig... but it wont give u that "heavy realistic" tone... but what I would Recommend is an SM-57.

An sm-57 + A good Amp( tube) then you can maybe achieve that sound your looking for with mic placements and different amp settings.

and try to get a "good" sound before adding plug ins or effects.

I've gotten some really nice sounds by using both an sm57 and an md409 on the same speaker. The 57 has that really aggressive attack (there's a spike around 2k in it's frequency response) and the 409 fills in everywhere else with a really "smooth" sound. Track that a bunch of times and pan them everywhere and you've got it.

But do read that article drossfile posted, there's a ton of great info there, as long as you don't mind the obscenities.
