Really mean sounding guitar

How do you get a normal guitar to sound like it does in this song...?

Would it be some expensive distortion pedal or do you do it in the mixing stages? Also, can anyone identify the guitar being used? That's sort of the sound I'm trying to go for.

Could be a synth of some kind, doesn't sound much like a guitar to me.

Sounds like guitar blended/doubled with some type of synth.

Having a good aftermarket pickup would definitely help in getting you towards that type of sound. It sounds to me like a really tight low end that's downtuned.
