It seems like every moderately priced "tube" mic pre-amp on the market today is really just a cheap solid state pre amp with a tube stage added mostly for marketing and as excuse to raise the price. What are some good 1 or 2 channel True tube preamps. Ones that have a really warm vintage sound to them. Or some solid state designs yielding simmilar characteristics. Priced below say 1 grand.

You could get an Altec 1566a for about $300 and get it refurbed for ???

That Altec is actually a really good idea.

Groove Tubes brick can be had for around $500. Or you could get a 2-channel in the Peavey VMP-2 (if you can score one on ebay) for a couple hundred more.

Isn't the Envoice a starved plate type of thing?

Thanks for all the input, I will keep my eyes open for any Altec products on ebay. concerning the other suggestions, the summit audio pre seems to have a solid state input. Is it still as good?

looks cool, who's your tech if it needs some mods or repair or a good talking to?

Sebatron. I even saw Dan Kennedy (Great River) call it a "wonderful preamp" on another Board.

A used Peavey/AMR VMP-2 - about $6-700 - real tube 2 channel pre with 2 band tube eq.

There is also the Hamptone tube pre as well, although it is a kit. You can get them assembled as well.
