I'm in the middle of setting up a studio for the first time. I am using a macbook pro and would like to run a set of powered monitor speakers with L+R RCA inputs and a powered sub with the single rca input.... what to do I need to make this setup work,, hopefully something on the cheap side,, thanks in advance!

With no crossover...? I suppose you could use a mixer and put the sub on an aux buss...

Best of luck calibrating that...

I dunno? What I'm trying to find out is what I need to hook it up. I was looking at external sound cards but most just have R+L RCA out and no sub output... What do I need to buy?

It's the presence of the sub that makes it difficult - if you just need normal monitors then that's easily accomplished via audio interface.

What is the purpose of the sub?

I have the sub already and I haven't been using it for anything. This is just a hobby to me so I don't need everything to be perfect. I make a lot of beats with my mpd and I'd like to have a lot of low end.

The least of your worries is a sub. And the second least of your worries is RCA connectors.

Your greatest concern should be to get a pair of speakers that are going to represent accurately your recorded material so that it will sound reasonable when played elsewhere. Look for powered monitors, and see if you can get to audition them. Find recorded material that you think is well-recorded, and which represents your recording goals, and try out some speakers using this material.

The connectors are immaterial; you can always get adapters or special leads made up . . . which is worth doing if and when you find the speakers that are right for you.

Well I have some monitors coming in the mail. Prodipe pro5... hopefully they are decent. I have no way to find anything around here. I live in a small town in north dakota so we have no legitimate music shops.

Bump - board's being spammed, so just bumping this thread back above the spam until teh mods kill it...

What do you guys recommend for an affordable audio interface that works with mac osx then?

It isn't so much a problem of which audio interface, though that can help in other ways, it's that the way to hook up your sub and main speakers is with a crossover. A crossover will keep the highs out of the sub and the lows out of the mains. Many crossovers let you adjust the balance between the mains and sub. The speaker system will sound better and the mains will get some added headroom. Expect to pay $90 for a really cheap one (by pro standards).
