real name or not?

Maybe I'm weird or something, but I like your name! It's unique, not a name I hear every day so it stands out. If you are a really good guitarist with your own style people will associate your name with your music, of course if you're bad they wont easily forget you either. I don't think I'll ever forget the name of a solo guitarist I heard when I was very young, and his name was a bit unusual... Andre Segovia. You've got an interesting sounding name to start with, most of us have to work to come up with one.

Middle name?

Do you have a middle name? you could just use your first and middle name and leave it at that. Or... you could reverse your middle name and first name and leave it at that.

ok, my name is Ethan Misenheimer and I'm performing solo music, and about to record an EP, my question is, should I promote myself under my real name, an assumed name or a band name? I would definitely use my real name if my last name wasn't so long, but it's length makes me wonder if it's usable. Any input is appreciated.

by the way, I know it's a matter of personal choice, but what would you do?

What are your songs generally about? Are they very personal and vulnerable? Are they more vague, or distant from yourself? What sort of image do you have? One thing, is to think of what approach are you taking to telling the story. In many cases, if it's a very personal project, where your schtick is wearing your heart on your shirt sleeves, definately use your own name. People in that case would identify better with a person, like hey that guy, he's just like me he feels all this stuff, rather than a flashy name. However, if your music is not that sort of thing I might say it would be more acceptable to use a flashy name.

Do you want to be a person doing music? or an entity that does music? Neither way is better, and both have their ups and downs, but it does require discression and thougt as to the psychology behind both approaches, and which way you want to come accross the most, teamed with how you think people generally respond to your music.

You're given name isn't bad. If you had a really dorky name or a name that's funny like anything with the last name Butts, hehe that's another story.

"Hi, my name is Hugh G Butts and I'd like to sing some songs about the love of my life and the guy she's now screwing..." <starts crying>

....yeah, not as effective.

seeing you have an unusually cool sounding name, I would use it.

My name is Russell Ollerton and I use just my last name as a musician, "Ollerton." You could also try that if you wanted.

Your name stands out. I would use it.

"Ollerton" actually sounds like the name of a town, I think it works.

My name is Milton Hughbert Lampshade Bufurd Slap-me-on-the-ass-Betty Smith jr.

WHat do you think?

John Jacob Jingleheimer-Schmidt?

:D

Your real name is fine unless YOU don't like it for some reason. If so, now is your chance to change it in one aspect of your life. Good for you, perhaps, but I doubt it will have any mpact on your career.
