we don't need rest!!
ok...so we are dealing with apples and oranges here. But I did a session and grabbed my favorite re20, but decided to stick the singers personal at4033 along side and ran it to a different track. The 4033 sounded VERY different. I was shocked. Thin, but clear...but like a cheapie mic. I admit I lean towards the dynamic sound on a vocal mic...even a 57, but the difference was like grabbing an EQ knob and going ballistic. So, you say, hey..that's the diff between a condensor and a dynamic (but no proximity on THIS dynamic)

The 4033 had to be broken, eh? I mean I am not an expert on a 4033 by any means...nor probably a mic expert on anything!!...ha! But I thought the 4033 really sucked. More to the point, I couldn't believe the amount of difference between the two mics.

btw, I tried that setup on 4 different singers that night...3 males and one female vocal. I ended up using the re20 (without even having to think about which sounded better) and believe it or not, a MXL990 on one of the guys... a cheapie condensor!! ha, again!!!

The difference among MY mics aren't nearly as big as the diffence between these two mics. It was like a Strat and a Les Paul.

Was the intoxicant REALLY that good? I just had to post this and see if this has ever happened to THIS degree to anyone else.

Could the 4033 be broken? Or maybe the intoxicants WERE that good and you were singing into the back if the mic :D :D .
I have a pair of 4033s and while not my favorite vocal mic, they ain't that bad.

I have a 4033 too... it's slightly dark-sounding, but it certainly doesn't sound "bad" at all... it is a good sounding mic for many contexts. I've used it quite successfully mic'ing the rear of an amp, as well as vocals and acoustic guitars.

Either your mic has a problem, or like you said, those intoxicants really got to you......! ;)

My 4033 has never sounded thin, not always the right one but not thin.

AT4033 and EV RE-20

I can't coment on your Audio Technica 4033 as I've only ever used the AT4050, but I've used the RE-20 extensively during a six year run on the radio. I had the choice there of: Neumann U89, AT40450, AKG 3000, and the EV RE-20. Most announcers there liked the U89, but the RE-20 was clearly the best for my voice- more substantial sounding. This is speaking of course, rather than singing, but I learned at the time that there were people with every choice in the World chose the RE-20 including Bonny Raitt.

Possibly, it is not that the AT is terrible, but that the RE-20 is just really the noticeably correct choice for your use.

Cheers,

Bambi B
