what is the difference between the rane pe-15 and sp-15?
i see on the back there is a strange power connector. will i need a converter to plug it into a 120v socket?
also i know that audio upgrades can upgrade these. what would they do to it?
i need an eq just for kick drum. im looking to get that "and justice for all" or pantera click tone. will those units do the trick?
thanks!!!!!!

Iv'e got a PE-15.
The ac jack is just like a phone line that goes to the transformer box to regular ac plug. It comes with the unit. Unless your'e buying new obviously you want to be sure the ac cord/transformer comes with it.
The PE-15, is usable IMO, you should be able to tweek the kick's
high end(clicks) easily. Though you could do that with a mixer too, however prolly has fixed center freq e.g. no control so it may be harder to get the click sound.
The PE-15 is 5 band(adjustable/variable to certain freq's) parametric eq, so it gives you more bands of frequencies to tweek, and of course is a better thing. It also has shelf's at the extreme freq's.
Don't know about the sp 15, maybe someone else can comment?
I hear the PE-15 can be upgraded at Audio Upgrades also, maybe
better op-amps? I dunno Chess?

I would highly recommend giving Jim a call yourself.

Just make sure it's on your lunch break or some other time of day that you have some free time. :D Jim is the type who likes to talk. Fortunately, he happens to be a pretty sharp dude who's very good at explaining things, so it will be a good education for you.

His philosophies on gear and his upgrades mostly center around the idea that there are a lot of very well-designed pieces of gear out there that use inferior components as a cost-saving measure. Usually these measures involve cheaper opamps and capacitors, so about 9 times out of 10, Jim's mods will have something to do with upgrading the opamps and caps. Anyway, the logic follows that you replace the cheapie components with something much closer to what the original designers had in mind and you get a vastly improved product.

Anyway, if you tell Jim specifically what you're looking for -- something good for kick drum click -- Jim will tell it to you straight. He may even recommend something that he doesn't work with, which shows the kind of ethical guy he is.

I got two PE-15's.

Interestingly, one has an external power supply with them phone cable lookin' connector, and another has an internal power supply.

I do like the PE-15's, and i found it to be really good value especially used. But I always found it adds a bit of noise and smears the sound a bit.

While back, I took one of them and swapped out opamps, took out DC blocking caps where possible and applicable, and added bypass caps. Noise level definitely went down, and seems like there's less of smearing when I compare the two of them side by side.

The un-modded one still gets used as a sidechain EQ. As ugly as Rane stuff is, they are a really good value.

thanks for the info guys!!! i just cannot get the kick sound i want with my mackie 24-8.
