I've got 512mb's of pc2700, like this.

Do I need to match it if I wanted to add more, or can I get newer/faster/bigger?

The mobo is a Gigabyte, cpu is a P2.4.

I say match it or change it all. I've never had problems with matched ram but I have with unmatched, ymmv.

I had 2x256 megs of pc2100 and recently added 1 gig of pc2700.I'm assuming 1580 megs of mixed ram is better than 1024 megs of one speed, but I may be wrong!

Even if you got a faster stick the ram timings would still need to be set according to the slowest stick. Since your mobo supports dual channel it would be much better to get a matching set of ram. Two 512MB sticks of PC3200 DDR 400 would be your best bet.

Your motherboard supports dual channel ddr have you tried to install it doing this? your pc2700 (2,700MB/s) starts moving 5400MB/s on dual channel mode, 5400MB/s is basically the same transfer as DDR2 667 (5300)

You might also want to get a new processor, it's like $78 bucks, but it'll double your performance... that'll go from a northwood 2.4ghz (i'm taking it that's your processor), 533mhz fsb 12kb + 8kb L2 cache 512KB cache to 3.0ghz 800mhz fsb 12kb + 16kb L2 cache 1MB cache cpu.

That'll open up a whole new can of worms that I'm not wanting to deal with right now.

Not yet, but that's why I posted the thread. I'll need to match the existing memory, right?

yes, that's ''recommended''. it does not mean that mis matched pairs won't work. Usually, by matching, they talk about spec wise, if they run at the same speed etc. Things like timing, if it's mismatched, it'll go with the slower timing module.

I've got 2 sticks of 512MB PC2700 2.5CAS RAM that I have been meaning to put up on the Ebay. Feel like making an offer? I can get you pictures or whatnot if you want. originally purchased from 4allmemory.com and used in a Dell Dimension 8300 for a couple years with no problems.
