RAM- Is 512mb enough?

Currently i have 256mb of kingston ram, which is not enough. I could get another stick of the same stuff and run it in dual channel, or i could get 2 new sticks of 512 and use those in dual channel. Obviously i'd prefer to manage with 512...Is this possible??

Better to get more now then wish you got more later. Get a pair of 512 sticks for dual channel. Just make sure you get at least 3200 ram or dual channel will be a waste

i never run more than 512.
dont need to go over a gig because of the way programmers code up audio apps. also the more you have the more you add to win maintenance overhead.

I vote for 512. 256 is simply inadequate, but I have 0 problems running 512.

now don't be telling them to get 3200 :) we need to make sure his mobo can handle 3200.

if we know what model motherboard or model computer we have, i can tell you exactly what model of kingston memory to buy. yes, dual channel is the way to go if your motherboard supports that as well.

I'm doing an 8-track 24bit/96KHz project in Sonar4 and I'm using 535MB of memory just for that out of the 1GB I have installed.

Depending on how many open memory slots you have I'd just throw a 512MB stick in and see if things improve to your liking. That way you'll have at least 512MB and whatever else you can retain from your earlier memory configuration (depending on total # of slots & sticks currently in use).

I ran with 256 for quite some time fine. Worked great until I got past 6 tracks or so, and if I added any real time effects... bad news.

512 should do you good, but RAM is so cheap your best bet is to max out your motherboard and never have to worry.. All it takes is one hiccup to ruin the best track of your life.

Dual channel RAM is always DDR400.

Ack! You honestly haven't had a problem with 98SE?
Not that it has anything to do with 98SE, but I don't understand how you can keep it stable enough to record anything serious.

hmmm. been a while, but i could've sworn i setup a system using 2700 for dual channel. guess i could be wrong though.

still make sure the motherboard supports dual channel though! :)

havent had a problem with 98se or the amount of RAM......now the 500mhz Celeron is limiting, but thats another story......

so what, you dont think anybody recorded anything serious on a PC before XP came out?

No, I think when XP came out Microsoft flipped the "Make windows 98 suck" switch on. Not that they would do something like that...

That must be true. I started having lotsa crashes with 98SE about that time.

You can put 2700 ram in dual channel but if won't take advantage of the it. All dual channel mobos support 3200 ram.

are u guys serious?

Unfortunatly, yes. I'm a linux guy, but in all the computers I've supported, after winxp was released 98se started to crap out. I honestly think it was intentional engineering. My guess is that Microsoft was too smart to have it triggered by an internet request, but they hard coded a database corruption procedure to start wreaking havoc after Whistlers release.

I wouldn't put it past them.

i have a lot of trouble believing that much as the tech in me wants linux to take over the world one day. i have many friends running 98 with no probs as well.
doing daw work day after day.
