seriously, you can argue that radio shacks are Sonys just recapped or whatever, but stop the nonsense. Seriously. You radio shack supporters are poor excuses for home recording enthusiasts. Get a job and buy decent gear for christ's sake. I won't be caught dead with a radio shack microphone. Radio shack's target market/audience is little old church ladies that know nothing about audio buying crap for their little church pa system and little jr. high kids starting a band to be cool that know nothing about gear. Shure/akg/audix/AT and others dominate the market for good reason so it doesn't take a freakin wiz to see that radio crap mics are no good.

fenix--I'd probably agree with ya for the most part--BUT--this little 30-3032 instrument mic that Harvey recommeded for toms is a very good mic for this purpose. I'm buying two more. Some of what they sell is to be avoided at all costs, but they do come up with a winner now and then.

Is that really necessary?

I probably make more than you , but some of us have other bills and aren't living at home at 30!

Primo mics?wow...
The Nakamichi CM300 mics that concert tapers love are simply rebadged Primo mics. The CM300s sell used for anywhere from $150 up. I bought the same mic under the original Primo name in a pawn shop for $20.
When I worked for Toby Guinn of Toby Speaker Corp in the 70s,we were a primo dealer.I still have a primo electret condensor in my mic box.
Another bit of syncronicity,Harvey (in addition to IMC),at the time you were at Radio Shack in the late 70s,my brother Mark Hicks worked in Radio Shack R&D at the Tandy Bldg.Roughly TRS80 era.

I'm having a Shack Attack right now. Excuse me. Gotta go!

Isn't a shack attack a sudden urge to get cheeseburgers from Burger king???

If radio shack mics are $h!7 then what are other decent low cost(20-30)mics? I know there has to be some out there.

About the only decent $30 mic is the ECM8000 but it's not really a good all around mic. There are a few good $75 - $100 mics.

Whining about a mic costing $100 is like deciding to be an amatuer race car driver and complaining about the cost of a helmet.

If you are lucky your mic costs are only 10-20% of your entire studio costs.

I confess!

I have two 33-1070D's (Shure omni dynamics) that come in quite handy from time to time.:p

If you heard my recordings/seen my setup you'd realize that $30 is 10-20% of my studio costs :D

lol, at least you have a sense of humor about it.

I realize it's hard for a lot of people to do good recordings on a really tight budget but there is minimum cost of entry into the quality recording market.

If you don't have much cash to blow then just work with what you have until you can spend some more. Buying more cheap gear won't get you anywhere and it will only make you $30 farther from getting something worthwhile.

Set your goals a little higher and save those pennies.

Maybe I'm being falsely modest, I do very well with the junky stuff, I used to have nice equipment a time ago... I'm just getting back in, so be the judge of whether $300 in equipment and a decent PC can hang with "the big boys" :) :

In particular check out "Manufacture of Misery"

Pretty nice! There are a few timing mistakes (or is it on purpous?), but for what you are using, it's really impressive.

They're probably not "mistakes", I try to keep things as free as I can when dealing with electronic music... and if they are you're the first to notice or say anything :p
