Magic Bag Of Sounds
I'm looking to upgrade my portable setup. I'm focusing on recording bands totally live in their own environments (ie I don't have a tracking studio). I'll be bringing a few panels of absorbers to help out with the isolation of the amps and the members will have the option of wearing headphones if they want.
This is a somewhat long term upgrade to my current studio, so I have time to save up to my budget. I've been tracking bands for a few months now seeing where my weaknesses are. Right now I'm basically just using a Soundcraft Live8 mixer and a Fostex VF16. Not bad, but not staggeringly great either. I mix in the box, which I plan to continue to do.
For typical bands I'm going to need about 12 inputs for the live tracking (drums, guitar, bass, maybe some misc room mics). Vocals and other special overdubs will be made using some nicer preamps.
Is the Alesis Multimix 12R any good? I really want to keep all the gear rackmountable, and this seems to be one of the few mixers I can find that are. I don't think this is going to be a step up at all from my Soundcraft mixer, more than likely just a sidestep.. but its about a quarter of the size. Did I mention portability is a huge factor? Right now its only $300 new, I'm sure I can talk them down a bit. I'm going to be getting a good 2 channel preamp for all the overdubs so really this is going to be used for drums.
any other suggestions? budget is obviously a factor, i don't want to spend over 1,000 unless its a big upgrade. would buying a bunch of 2 channel preamps be a better idea?
