Hi, I'm new. I'm putting together an extremely cheap lo-fi bedroom studio to get some stuff off my chest and out of my head. I just obtained k4r synth module that's been working fine sitting on a desk shelf. However, I am about to obtain a fostex d80 (harddrive recorder). I'm thinking that a rack might be a good idea because i don't want my new recorder getting jostled and space itself is a valuable commodity in my room. Also, is there anywhere good to get a small cheap one that isn't guitar center in san francisco? How much are smll racks anyway? Thanks.

the rack will definatley be a good idea. Small rack shouldnt be that expensive, especially for a small one. Look around on the net, they are all over the place.

edit: You could also build your own. Its basically just a box with some strips on the inside to screw the gear into. Does this sound like something you could do?

No, I don't have any tool or that much free time.

I found one on ebay a couple of years ago, though it is more of a 'live' sound rack. Works great in my Florida room studio. 18 rack spaces, two "arms" on top that hold my board, cheap casters so I can move it when I need to...all for the low, low price of $49.95 if I recall. Do a search and you should get plenty of hits. BTW, great investment to organize your stuff!

Also keep in mind if you're actually gonna be moving your rack or not. If you're not and it will be stationary then i wouldn't feel bad with picking up a cheepie-eebie. Odds are it won't fall apart if you don't start draggin it all over the place....if you do want somehting portable then definately look at the quality of construction...it is your gear for gods sake and nobody is gonna pay to replace it but you...if its a stationary rack than particle board would be fine for starters. you'd be surprised how decent a cheap fiberbaord rack can look with a little shelving contact paper.

i built my own rack a few weeks ago. sad thing is all the wood and hardware came to about $60. but it was fun to make!

I got a fairly cheap, nice-looking rack for like $60 bucks I think from http://www.nice-racks.com (it isn't porn, I promise). It might not be great for portability, though, because it is made of heavy wood.
