Hey everybody, I have started looking into getting all of my Rack gear
for my analog home recording studio and I have confronted with what to get.
This was what I was thinking: Basic tools necessary to get a descent finished product.
I am also kind of on a budget. I'm looking for vintage vibe.
Here is my future rack:
1) Stereo Amplifier: Crown D-60/75 or Hafler Amp
2) Headphone Amp: Tascam MH-40 or Rolls 6-Ch Amp
3) Multi Effects: Lexicon MPX-100
4) Compressor: FMR RNC
5) Tascam RCA and 1/4" Patchbays
6) ART MPA II Preamps(Optional) or other Preamps
Is this a good start? Anything I need to add or change?

Yeah, I'd think that piece might be important...:D

To a 1" 16-Track Tape Machine.
My Mixing board is a Tascam M-520 20x8 w/ 4 Aux.

Randy, I am afraid you thread has gone south!:drunk:

and now back to our regularly scheduled program...

As to the rack gear, how well do you know everything you've got?
Really well?
Fairly well?
The reason I ask is that when I was gettin going, I had GAS really bad and started just buyin shit. Lots of pretty lights and knobs...
:o
A wise man told me to knock it the hell off and learn everything about each piece of gear I had.
Learn it to the point where I'd know it's weaknesses and be able to make a better call on what other gear I may wanna buy.

What say you Sir Rhoads of Randy?

(p.s. boobies)
:D

You'll need/probably want Preamps, Compressors, EQs, and probably a multi-effects unit. You have most of that listed. What's your budget? Sounds like an alright start. RNC should be one of the first cheapy comps you get, art pres have gotten decent reviews around here, lexicon multi effects are pretty decent, you'll definitely want EQ too. What about mics? I would go with some nicer pres (I like the RNP, and GAP pre73 on the cheap end).

Moresound has a ton of stuff and has pointed me in the right direction a couple of times recently so I'd defer to his expertise.

Sounds like you're headed in the right direction. Personally, I'm not crazy about Tascam patchbays but they'll work. RNCs are pretty nice (I have two Mercenary edition). The only down side to them is that they're stereo and not dual mono but they're still really nice compressors. I realize your asking about rack mounted type gear but how's your monitor situation? Have you thought about patchbays ? Lots of places to spend cash.
