Rack Case Dimension help

the pigeon knows the way.
On the specs for this SKB 8U rack case, it says:

Rack Depth Front Rail to Back Lid: 18.75 in
Rack Depth Front Lid To Back Lid: 15.75 in

If the front lid is outside of the front rail, how is it closer to the back lid?

Or does the rail stick out past where the front lid connects, and they're measuring from where it connects (but not from the farthest point out on the lid itself)?

I have a PC that is rack mounted and it is about 17.75" deep, and I just want to make sure I can fit it in this thing.

Thanks!

Those spec sounded reversed... try looking up the same item elsewhere and see if the specs make sense. The cover to cover should be the larger of the two measurements.

Exactly my thoughts.

I just called SKB up and talked to a sales guy there.
He started off by saying "To be honest, not all the dimensions on our site are 100% correct."

I then asked him to verify the dimensions, and he said that, "rail to rail, it is 15.75 in and front rail to the back lid is 18.5 inches".

So, the site was close, but the labeling was reversed. According to him, the 18.75" figure was off and should be 18.5".

Anyway, I think this will barely fit the depth of my PC in it.

I'd try to find something with a couple more inches of depth... It's very nice to have the room to wrap all the cables off of the back of the PC inside the back cover still connected... saves a lot of time in setup...

I like to leave as much cabling intact as possible when moving site to site...

Oh, and wherever a PC in concerned in racked components, try to leave an empty space above and below... at the worst one free space above... I've always tried to rack PCs in they're own dedicated (portable) rack just because of the heat issues...

I looked for a while at different cases, and I found a good deal on this one on craigslist. Also, I want something that will fit in my car.

I built a 25U rack case with wheels and all (wooden), but there's no way it'll fit in my car, which is why I needed something smaller for when I want to haul some stuff.

I'll have .75 inches behind the PC, maybe enough to leave some things plugged in, but definitely not others such as the power cord I'm sure.

Currently I've got a ton of fans in my PC and the bottom has been left open (room for storage underneath), but yes, I've considered leaving the top open for heat dissipation, as well.

Anyway, thanks for the tips!

The SKBs with the *blue* logo are the deepest! the reds are alittle shallower ....and this is compensating for the lid depth.

The shallowest SKB are the ones with the *flat* backs and will only fit shallow FX units.

I was able to get some long units in the blue logo SKBs by putting washer shims between the unit and the rail so as the unit hangs out of the front an inch or so, but you need longer than normal screws.

So if your cramped for space in the back for your cables .... just put the front lid on ... then tip the SKB onto it's front then you can easily roll your cables into the back then put the back lid on and your ready for transport.

I try to keep the fans limited to just the CPU and Power supply fans... yeah things tend to run hot, but much quieter. Depends on how close to the source and how loud the source is. I wouldn't worry about fans are a punk/heavy metal show, but an acoustic solo is a whole different matter. I actually put a kill switch on the fan in my Mackie SDR HD recorder for those extremely intimate performances (like right in the control room). Much quieter then my Carillon DAW PC, though I wouldn't run it full time with no chassis fan.

SWEET!... because I got one of the blue logo'd ones.
Good idea with the washer shims. I actually was thinking the same thing!

Thanks for the tips.

Nice. Yeah, I definitely have way too much noise going on. I'm afraid my power supply fan is the loudest. Not much I can do there. Then I have two video cards with a fan on each, though they probably don't add too much noise.

I then have the chassis fan, a fan in the front blowing onto the hard drives, then two fans in the rear..... a total of EIGHT FANS! I know I should at least unplug one of the rear fans, and then maybe the one for the hard drives..

Most hardware stores will carry an aluminum spacers of different sizes and I found that the half inch worked the best for me. See what you come up with.
