R. Walt Vincent...Mesmer Studios

To me DIF seems a bit more polished than MFTMA, in the sense that I don't hear as many "production tricks" or however you want to say it. The parts seem to have more space between them on DIF. Maybe the mix is a bit less busy?

On DIF it seems to me that within a song each instrument has its own voice and its own sound, whereas on MFTMA the parts tend to blend (in a good way) a bit more. I realize that I'm speaking in generalizations, but these are the overall differences that I recall.

That being said, they're both incredible albums. If I could only choose one...well, I'd probably kick the person that was making me choose and run off with both of them! But if I really could only have one, I would probably take MFTMA. It just has a certain feel to it. Also, I obviously head that one first, so that may have something to do with it.

I'm still marvelling that you're willing to share all of this. There probably aren't a lot of guys in your position that would take the time to do this, so thanks again.

Are you gone R. Walt?

Was it something I said?

J/K...I hope you come back. I've appreciated everything that you've shared.

Hey - Yep I'm still around.
Been super busy the last few months finishing what I consider my best work to date. It's a record for a singer/songwriter Kip Boardman, and I'm pretty psyched about it. Super old school, sweet, and warm sounding, great songs, sick musicians - amazing guitar work by Tony Gilkyson (X, Dylan, Lone Justice, Sam Phillips), and orchestral arrangements by Van Dyke Parks (Beach Boys, Brian Wilson). It should be available beginning next year. Recorded and mixed entirely at Mesmer Studio, so I'm proud of that too.

So what's up with y'all?

Sounds awesome. I remember reading news updates on the Mesmer AV website that mentioned Kip Boardman and didn't know who he was. I'll definitely check it out. When is it coming out?

I got my first actual preamp recently, the FMR RNP, and I'm loving that...except for the gain staging, which is in six decibel increments. It's funny how I read things on these boards and sometimes have no idea what people are talking about until I run into the same problem, and then I'm like..."Oh, so that's the big deal about gain staging..."

I saw where Pete was recording a new album. You involved?

Also, I really liked your work with the Format. They're from Arizona, as am I, so I thought it was really cool that they got to work with you. How were those sessions?

As if I haven't asked enough questions, here's another: I record a lot of songs with acoustic guitars and no drums due to limitations with space, mics, etc...and I have problems with the acoustic guitars taking over the mix and being a bit abbrasive. Any recording/mixing techniques that might help counter this? I know it's a little abstract, but it's my most recent recording problem that I can't stop thinking about.

Thanks for remembering us. Happy Holidays.

totally awesome

Just thought i'd pop my head in and say that i too found this thread on google, and wanted to thank you R.Walt for taking time and replying. I really respect your work, and it was really great to hear the way you did things. I love the fact that you made such a great sounding record (MFTMA) with limited gear choices. Although i am also a huge fan of DIF, i think both records have there amazing and artistic qualities to them. But hearing how you did that really makes me wanna work harder and longer and records i'm doing with the indie/smaller budget stuff. How much of DIF was tracked at your place and at commercial places? Thanks again man, keep kicking ass!

Hey R. Walt, I too am a fan of your work. I know this thread is ancient but if you ever do stumble across it again, how did you and pete record drums on MFTMA? Electrikaz asked that earlier in the thread and i think you looked past it. Hope your still out there somewhere!
