i need a quick set of monitors.. i know some ppl don't like 20/20's cuz a lot of ppl think they're to forgiving..
but right now.. my money isn't all there.. i was either gonna get a pair of passive 20/20's or Truths...
so truths vs passive 20/20's which monitor would you go with? i produce hip hop and r&b

Not from experience but from what I've heard on this board:

Yorkville ysm1 Passives are a good deal 229.00
M-Audio sp-5, not much low end but only 199 at MF (probably not to good for HipHop or R&B.

I bought a pair of Truths and returned them before I even hooked them up. They were falling apart... brand new.

Good luck. If you do a search for "monitors" you find about a trillion threads.

See Ya

i'm getting a pair of hafler tsrm8.1's with a trm12 for my birthday.. but i need something decent to mix on now.. i've used the truths and the 20/20's got clean mixes with both..
i have a friend that has the Yorkville ysm1, i need something cleaner.. i need some monitors that can handle a little more in the low end too..
i know the truths and 20/20's can handle what i'm trying to do.. i'm gonna keep the monitors but they'll be only used for making beats on after i get my haflers
the maudio's.. ;) i blew a set already so i know i wouldn't dare to bring them into my studio..
i can get some passive 20/20's less than the sp-5's.. and i can get some truths for $330..

Since you know your 20/20s and have gotten clean mixes on them,, why not just get a good sub?

i don't really like 20/20's.. they to forgiving.. distorted music tend to sound good on them...they're to damn bright too... o well i guess i'll go to guitar center and get a pair of Truths.. if i don't like them, i'll take them back with in 30days and switch them for something else..

i was at the music store for a few hours yesterday sitting in front of a Korg Triton LE through some Behringer Truth Monitors, and they sounded freaking awesome. A lot of fidelity even at barely audible volumes and very clear sound. They were for sale there for 349.99 a pair which seemed really low for the quality.

i am not a hard core sound engineer, but i think i have pretty good ears, and i really liked the truths.

just my $0.02

but alex they were a little bright right?
thats thoe only thing about the truths.. they get a little splashy...set them to -2 and they sounds great

I got the Truths a month or so ago, they sound great to me, for the money. I think they have plenty of low end. Like any monitors it takes time to get used to the sound of them, especially if their the first real monitors you buy. I went from mixing on a home stereo unit, to the Truths, and I'm not sure i have them set right yet. I plan on in the near future getting the Mackie 824's though.

they're just for temp... like i said in another post i usually work on v8,v88.hafler,mackie,genelec and adams...i can get the truths very cheap so i'ma get them.. they'll be temps in my studio until my birthday then they're gonna be just for making beats on..

...audix 1-a's $600/pr retail...blows away the events and the truths....really

actually they don't...a local studio i was at last week has them.. they real nice for producing vocals, i'll give um that.. but overall monitors... they aren't near the truths nor the 20/20's..
the truths and 20/20's are flatter than them, plus they actually have a decent bass response.. the audix 1a's a lacking, i'd need to add a sub with them to produce my songs..i'm not a huge fan of V6's but i'd take the V6's before i take the audix 1a's...

the truths have a roll off kinda high.. but they seem to pick up a good 15hz under the tuning frequencies... i can add a sub with them cheap.. and i just might for the extra low end.. most of my songs peak from 17hz to 44hz for bassline ;) though the human ear can only hear as low as 20hz.. with a quality stereo system..17 to 28hz HURTS...

but like i said i can get the Truths very cheap.. under $330 new.. so i'm gonna get them.. i've worked with them before and got clean mixes...

I got my Truths about a month ago and think they are really great sounding monitors for their price. Used in the nearfield equilateral triangle setup is yielding excellent clarity and a very nice stereo image.

Until I have the cash for some socalled "real" monitors (right after never) I'm totally happy with these.

Check out the Tascam VLS21 set up. 2 flat panel speakers and a Sub for $100. Not real powerful, only 25 watts total, but clean-clean-clean. I'm thinking about getting them over the B2030A set so I can keep my hearing. I tend to keep inching the volume up and after a few hours the family is begging for mercy. When I finish, my ears will ring for a couple of hours....not good!!!

You need to calibrate your volume knob and compare frequently to volume-adjusted references when you mix.

Well, I tried out a set of the VLS21's and they sounded OK. I A/B'd em against my JBL's and promptly re-packed them and took 'em back. I have a new appreciation for those old JBL's. Maybe they are too flattering, but they have a sweet sound. In response to the question ??Why would I keep turning it up?? The answer is because my ears lose sensitivity after a while. One thing I have learned is not to try a serious mix after tracking w/ headphones. I think it's related to the amount of hours I spent in front of a full stack back in the day.

if you are getting something for your birthday, why not just hold out, and throw some money into that and get something nice?

if you want a real truthful mix and want to hate everything you mix, get NS10M's LMAO.. i paid $400 for my pair. damn monitors, i hate them with a passion because everything sounds exceptionally shitty on them.

FYI i'm buying a pair of Mackie HR624's at some point in the near future, which with some patience, can be found for $500-600 for a pair used. i hope they will be a nice alternative to the yamahas (but im keeping both pairs of course... gear slutz that i am ;)
