I jus ordered a mxl v67 and I dont plan on staring at it with no way of using it.. sooo i really want to order a power source before it gets here... the question is... i read about "preamps with phantom power" then theres just "phantom power" and the other catagory which i probably cant afford is "Mixers with phantom power" ...

does it matter which type I get? preamp with phantom power or just phantom power?

do mixers under 50 bucks with phantom power exist?

Assuming you don't already have some kind of preamp as part of your soundcard, you will need a mic preamp to make use of your mic. You will also need phantom power for that condensor mic - it won't work without it. Most, but not all, mic preamps come with phantom power. You should get a preamp that provides 48v phantom. Not all do. While some mics require less than 48v, most need 48v and a preamp with inadequate phantom power won't run those. You could get a cheap mixer that would have phantom and preamps. If you wanted multiple pres on the cheap, that might be the way to go. Otherwise, there have been lots of posts about inexpensive, but decent mic preamps on this site and others. Low cost units that people seem to like include Rane MS-1b, Studio Projects VTB-1, and the M-Audio DMP-3. All have 48v phantom power and all street for @$160 or less.

Solid state pre-amps with very low noise can be found at very affordable prices, because the technology is not expensive to produce. (On the other hand, most people will advise you to avoid cheap tube pre-amps.)

Anyhow, this is what I got. I wanted to have phantom power for recording live with up to 4 mics, and this fit the bill. $79.

It's real clean and I am very happy with it. I think they also make one with 8 channels.

I'm sure the units pohaku mentioned are great, I just didn't want to spend that kind of money because I needed 4 channels of phantom power pre-amps.

what about somthing a little cheaper? i only need to power 1 mic at the most..i doubt I'll ever need 4.. 2 would be nice but not a necesisty (i cant spell) . I was looking on ebay because thats where i got a excellent deal on my v67. I see alot of tubes... are they that bad?

By all means, use e-bay. I've bought a lot of stuff off e-bay from cheap to embarassingly expensive. Generally avoid toob gear at the low price point. At this price level it is solely a marketing gimmick and sounds terrible. The one exception IMHO is the VTB-1 which can be used without the toob feature. You need to get up to at least a GT Brick before the tube feature is worth considering (maybe the EH, but I haven't used or heard one).

I was in exactly the same boat, I had the choice between buying a $40 Au Behringer or Leem phantom power unit or $85 Au or a Behringer UB802 with 2 'invisible' (but not inaudible...) mic preamps, plus 3 stereo channels and eq. I ended up getting the 1202 for $135 Au with 4 mic inputs. For me there was no point spending $40 when for about double I got much more than double the product.

So far I'm happy, the desk is not particularly noisy (quiet enough for my needs), wish it had more than one send per channel, but it powers my mic fine and sounds great.

BTW, the mic is a cheap multipattern Alctron LDC I bought direct from the factory in Ningbo (not in the group buy). Maybe cheap gear compliments cheap gear...

yea thats a $100 piece of equipment.. i could get a mixer with phantom power with 100 bones.. if you guys truely think these tubes are crap I'll wait for quality.. i dont want bad sound.. but my price range for a while is below $60. and all I see for that is tubes.. (I dont even know what the differance between tube and not tube is) And I really dont want to have dreams of the v67 ripping my tounge out and sticking it into the wall cuz i cant give it the attention it wants. lol.. please tell me what you think of this..

and this...
and a vacuum? wtf

i cant find anything not tube in that price range :(

does the name Behringer in tube preamps not mean anything?

:( :( :( :(

Generally, for me, the B word means stay far, far away. They do have some equipment that functions reasonably well (their converter comes to mind), but the QC is generally lacking and then there is the issue of their cavalier approach to others' intellectual property rights (see other threads on this subject on this site). I'm not a fan, but YMMV.

I note that lots of VTB-1s on e-bay have sold for @$65-70. Tube designs at this price level are starved plate designs that generate distortion - buzzy, muddy distortion. They are a marketing gimmick designed to entice buyers who think that tube gear is special and necessary to create a "warm" sound. B has even used LEDs in some of their gear to make it look like there are glowing tubes. The VTB-1, even though it is a "toob" unit, allows you to turn off the toob circuit and the SS circuit is very decent. Real tube gear that operates at proper voltage levels typically starts at the $400 per channel level (street price for the GT Brick although it has come down some recently as I now see them go on e-bay sometimes for $350 or so) for single channel stuff. The less expensive EH unit has also received some plaudits on this site (but I've not used or heard this one so I can't offer an opinion). The Peavey VMP-2 is still a real bargain at @$600-700 for 2 channels if you can find one (discontinued and used only) and Sebatron is also well regarded ($800 for a single channel, $1200 for 2 channels) as is A-Designs (similar price ballpark). After that, you get into real money. My Pendulum MDP-1 runs @$2350 for 2 channels, and Millennia and GT ViPre (among others) are right up there too.

At lower price points, you are generally better off going with good solid state pres or even a cheap mixer (small Mackie mixers have always been popular for this) than trying to get decent tube gear. More selection is available and there are some very nice, relatively high quality units to be found. I started off with used Symetrix SX202s (2 channels for @$125) and still use them, even though I have better (and pricier) gear now. Perfectly good clean SS preamps with phase, pad and proper phantom power. And they hold their value - I could probably sell them for what I paid for them with no problem.

Personally, I'd spring for the extra $15 or $20 and get the VTB-1 rather than the B unit.

thanks alot man...with that being said, the waiting game begins. but I know when that mic comes in I'm gonna wanna rob a bank to get the phantom power :p
