Be Here Now
I would like to transfer a few songs (on audio CD right now) to my computer so they can be turned into MP3's and sent over the web as MP3 files.

Do I need a sound card such as Soundblaster to do this?

Any help would be appreciated; I haven't got a clue on how to do this and a friend recommends a trip to Fry's tonight but I'm not sure what I really need to make it happen. Thank you!

I am assuming you have a CD-ROM drive on your computer. If your computer makes sound, it already has a sound card. If not, you'll need one. If so, all you need is a program which will convert the files to mp3 format. There are a number available free on the internet, such as RealPlayer, Music Match Jukebox, etc. If you have a Windows PC, it should have Windows Media Player, which will convert CDs to mp3s as well.

If your computer has a CD drive already, then all you need is a WAV -> MP3 converter. You rip the song off the CD onto your harddrive as a WAV file, then you use a software program to convert it to MP3. I use Cakewalk Pyro 2004 for ripping/converting (when I last looked it was a $29 download from cakewalk.com). I have seen others suggest other programs, some of which, I think, are free. You might find out more if do a search for "MP3 converters".

Yes sir. If you've got a slow internet connection check out download.com and download FreeRIP or something like that which is not as bulky to download. There are many options out there. All you need to do is serch for "audio ripping", "MP3 converters" (as suggested already) or something along those lines and you'll find many, many results. Best of luck.
