Thanks Sigma, I don't think I'll change them up, just want to retrack to get a better recording. :D

Nice guitar playing BTW

Chris - very nice song and very nice vocals - much as I have come to expect from you.

I'm pretty much going to echo what everyone else said. The guitar tone is in significant contrast to the song itself. This may be what you wanted. But it does make it stand out more than it otherwise would. The negative, to me, is that you have your listeners subconsciously trying to decide whether they like the sound of it or not, and not listening to the song as a result (if that makes any sense whatsoever).

The bongos I could take or leave. I don't hate them, but they don't seem to add anything either. Here again it's not what you "expect" to hear in a song like this - which could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your perspective.

The bottom line though is that when the song and vocals are this good, the rest is just window dressing anyway. So please take the comments in that light. This is good stuff even if you don't touch a thing.

This sounds very nice to me Chris. I could take or leave the congas...they're a bit of a distraction to me. It's probably their pitch...something a bit bassier maybe, warmer. It's not bad...but if you're looking for better...

The guitars sound very nice together. I think somone already mentioned the outro guitar sound. Kill it. Before it kills the end of this song.

I was actually pretty happy with the last mix of this I heard, not the first one though. It's a great song with some fantastic singing! There are some elements now that could very well be omitted as they don't seem to have the same good sound quality and impact of the rest of the arrangement.

All just my subjective opinions.

Great song Chris!

AND THE WINNER IS...

I don't know. I was so sure about some stuff, and now I'm wavering like a gambling addict on SuperBowl Sunday. I was kinda' just looking for a level check, but now I'm rethinking...(which is never a good idea).

I know Ed (Barometer) wants to ditch the congas and add something lower, and that seems to be agreeable to most, so we'll see what happens when I finally ship one of my shitty CD's to those of you who have been cool enough to make it happen...which includes everyone who has ever listened and commented.

Boydrj - Okay, on your CD, there will be both percussion and fuzz lead (my personal favorite), except at the very end. Thanks for listening again.

Kramer - I hadn't thought about it, but I love that lead on Mainstreet, so maybe it's a subconscious thing. Good call.

Mix - thanks...I think Ed's changing it.

Gidge - I owe you a couple of listens...sorry. Work is actually kicking my ass...I'm there for ya...soon :D

WATYF - You get the version SANS lead. I was glad to hear that (as a drummer) you didn't slam the percussion. Thanks for the honest opinion on the guitar.

Powder - I hear you. You get the one that WATYF gets. THANKS!!

pglewis - I appreciate the listen. I don't know which version you're getting, but you understand the debate very well!!... You're a talented guy, for a 74 year-old nun. :D Thank you.

David - Thanks...you get the version that's going to Kramer.

Guernica - I'm speechless about the vinyl comment. And yeah, I need to smooth out the lead. HERE'S MY PICKLE...My favorite arrangement in the whole world is the setup that Emmy Lou Harris tours with. It's Her (on acoustic), and a female percussionist (shakers, tambourine, and some stick), and the percussionist's dad, who plays probably 34 different electric gits, all distorted and beautiful. I'm destined for NPR, at best, but I love that she's always stayed true to what sounds good to her, so my copy is gonna' have the lead on it. I'm a weird fuck. I really appreciate your post a lot.

JR - You've listened to this more than I have. I LOVE THAT!!! You get the version without congas or lead. I wanna' keep those eyebrows where they belong.

Jake - Yeah man...you get the version that I'm keeping. Long live huge delays and fuzztones. Thanks.

dachay... - I can't spell your screenname!! You've obviously been down this road before. I appreciate your post. You're gonna' sing for me, right? Please?

Sluice - Honest feedback is the cornerstone of a rewarding recording experience, and I appreciate yours a ton. You had more to do with getting this tune back on the right track than I did, so I really thank you. I don't know what version you get.

BY THE WAY, I MIXED THE CONGAS TOO LOUD, AND THAT'S MY FAULT, BECAUSE I LIKE THEM A TON...but Ed's gonna' re-do them anyway.

And now I see that as I'm posting this, somebody brought my daughter's thread back from the dead. Okay. I am now, without a doubt, the most hated person in this clinic.
***********************************

LET THIS ONE GO - I REALLY REALLY appreciate your ears a lot, and I'm done. No more tunes for this CD. I have a "mastering' date (sounds kinda' kinky) October 26-27, and I appreciate all the help. (I'm not apologizing anymore either!!!).

bye

You can apologize for ignoring poor jamal buckethead's reply

OH SHIT!!!

Chad - Man, I knew I'd do that, because...and this is the God's honest truth, I was talking to JB about your post, and how you usually just pretty much nail everything first rattle out of the box, and how you're all cool and stuff - no ego posts.

And then I omitted you altogether. Screw Jamal, I talk to him daily. He heard the tune 3 times before he made me post it. But you, my golden-eared friend, should not have been omitted.

Sorry man... I'll leave forever now.

LOL! Chris chris chris the amphetamine cowboy... take some deep breaths, pass out, come to, and then fo-gettabout it! :D You're way too antsy. Check your water system for traces of meth ;) Slow down from 1,000,000 mph to about 900,000...

Chad

Maybe some of Sam's pot would mellow out the paranoia :)

Chris, killer tune. I'm starting to listen to everyone's songs as I try to make Home rec. my home.. I kinda like the congas. They do ad fill and a needed fullness. Just makes it sound more finished and Pro to me I guess. but yes, the tuning is a little bit off... I totally dug this song.. and also can't wait to see you hit it big. Awesome voice. I wish god would have given me either a tenor or a bass voice but alat, I'm cursed to be a baritone... shucks

-Brent

chris: I get the one with the fuzz-tone lead and so should everyone else :D. And the threads will die when we say so, so nyah. Seriously though, I've heard your daughter's tune and just haven't gotten around to saying anything yet so it's gonna be alive for a little longer.

Nice song. I'd agree with everyone on the lead tone. The percussion works for me. I wouldn't mind hearing a little more clarity on the vocals. I think it's the reverb having too much mids and maybe needing a little longer predelay. I'd like to hear the backing vocals a little higher. But that's all opinion. If you like it call it done.

Ya dude chill. If I got upset everytime someone had a negative comment about my work, or pretended to like it when in fact they have NOOOO idea what I'm talking or playing about but they need a higher post count so people will like them more and it shows they really really care...well shucks. I'd be dead.

I know I'm late in the thread but....I agree with the comments about the tone of the lead guitar. I like the performance a lot, the tone just sounds way fuzzy and out of place in the song. Someone mentioned a mandolin earlier. That might be worth trying out or just defuzzing that guitar a bit.

I like the percussion. I think it's exactly what the song needed...only....again I agree with most other comments that the conga's (or bongos) should be tuned lower. Nice job Barometer. I also think that the playing could be just a tad more interesting and less predictable. Don't take that the wrong way B. I'm guilty of the same thing when I play on someone elses tune, it's like I'm trying so hard not to get in the way that some of the spice that I'm capable of gets lost.

Looking forward to the next version. I still think this is your best song that I've heard Chris...aside from your daughter's post.

Here's my take (oh boy). Great song. Really great song. Vocal and guitar (acoustic) is spot on. The lead tone has that fuzz box tone that just isn't warm enough for my tastes. The shaker and tambrine works fantastic but I'm not sure about the congas. It's almost too busy since the rest of the tune is so laid back.

Hehehehe - I must have come off a little more "I give a shit" than I had intended. Believe me, this is fun for me...I think I just worry about annoying people with all these posts...and re-posts, and re-runs of re-posts - ALL RIGHT!!!! Somebody gave my thread AND my daughter's thread 1 star!!! (which might kinda' prove my point, b/c there's no WAY Jaimee deserves that :D ).

The opinions on the guitar tone are as bi-polar as most of you probably are. :D

Zp, Track Rat, erichenryus, TexRoadKill (nice damned name, btw), pglewis, and sluice - Thanks. I was gonna' just PM you guys, and I started, but then I remembered that I have a job that requires at least some of my time.

:D
-Mr. Relaxed...(bahahaha...yeah, right)

Well, I think the star count was originally intended for the quality of the thread itself...not the song. But people use it for song ratings. I don't pay much attention to them myself. I mean, what do you really get from that?

This is a great song Chris! If I could give this mix 4.6 stars I would. :D

Chris,

I thought this mix sounded very good, especially the guitars and the vocals. Obviously, Jaimee's been coaching you on vocal technique.

This is really nice!

A full mix that really flows well. I can hear everything perfectly.
As far as the "fuzzy" guitar I really like it!
Its grating, but since it has its spot in the mix, and isn't really long at any one lick, I think it can fit!

Print this one b4 it drives U crazy!
I can only hope to acheive half this!

Chris,
Another strong song, I didn’t hear the original so my judgement isn’t coloured. Here’s what I think; at the top of the song the distorted guitar makes an appearance far too early. With such a strong (strident?) tone, it is needed for effect later. Support guitar work is excellent, well played and good tones. Vocals as ever, really the focal point and the multi tracking is really well done.
Personally, I don’t have a problem with the bongo’s/conga’s and the shaker works well in the structure of the song.

The lead guitar should be used just twice; once at 1:30 for the main solo and again at the end of the song. All other instances of it should be removed. If you want a different sound here, you don’t need me to tell you that slide geetar would work very well imho.

Overall, I would be concerned that the song is getting too “busy”; it’s a strong song there just seems to be a lot going on in the background, if anything, there are too many guitar sounds and other stuff going on that distracts. Try taking away or lowering some of the instruments in the mix and see how that makes a difference.

But when all is said and done, I downloaded your song to my lap top and played it at least 12 times last night and this morning for pleasure, so that should tell you something.:)

When I grow up I want to be just like you:)

Nice song. The guitar parts work well together. Nice pretty melody. Good lyrical hook. Good overall writing.

Some of the words around 1-1:15 are a bit tough to hear. It took a while to get to the hook. You could probably bring up the harmonies a bit.

Overall I liked it quite a bit.

I like it! Only thing I'd like to hear would be a bigger tamborine. Not louder... Bigger...

Man, your CD ought to be great... Hope you do well with it!
