...happier than you.
I have a problem... I suck. :p Since I can't play guitar very well, I can never make it through a take without screwing up... so as a result, I'm always having to start recording again in the middle of a song... but I can't seem to figure out how to start recording in the middle of a track. What I mean is... how do I make the recording point somewhere in the middle of a track, yet still let myself hear a few bars of the song before it starts recording so I can get an idea of where it's at? If I use "punch-in" I have to set a beginning and an ending point.. but I'm not doing a "punch-in", per-say.. so I don't have an "end" point.. I just want to start at, say, 2:20 and finish out the song.. but I don't know how long the song's gonna be, since I haven't finished it yet, so I can't set an end point for the "punch-out". What options do I have? Do I need to just set the punch-out point at some distant time (like 5:00) that I know I won't get to before the song's over?

Um... Punch in/out is for fixing problems in a known section of a track. That's not what you want to do.

At the top of the main track view you'll see a little time line. Click it somewhere. You'll notice that a cute little white bar drops down the screen. Now click the play button and notice where the playback starts! Same deal works for recording!

LOL... thanks.. but I had already noticed that... :p What I mean is, I need to start recording at a specific point, but I need to hear a few seconds of what's already recorded for a "lead in" without recording over it. I know you're not supposed to use punch-in for that,.. which is why I'm asking what else I should use... :p The way I do it now is to just use two tracks, but then I have to try to make the effects on both tracks equal and I have to remember if I change one track I need to make the same change to the other just to keep it sounding identical... Isn't there a way to say "start recording when it gets here but not before that"..?

Ok, then what you need is punch in/out recording. I don't understand how you can't know when you're going to punch out????? That doesn't make any sense to me unless you're working on some pretty crazy tunes!

Just set your punch out time at twenty minutes or something if you really don't know :)

Oh.. O.K... well that's what I was asking pretty much... like, "should I just pick some lengthy time period as the punch-out time (i.e. 10 minutes) and do it that way..." But I was just wondering if there was another, more "specific" way to start recording on a track without recording over what's already there... but using punch-in/out is fine, so I'll just do that..

thanks man.
