I got an offer to sign a distribution deal with a company that has there own distribution through Universal. The label is Lafette records/Universal, (so they say)..The head of the label wants me to pay them about $1000 for marketing and promotion, while they do the work. My songs are recorded and they will mix and master them for the release. They will handle all other expenses. I have all the contracts for everything, and I believe everything is legit anf not a scam, but I'd like your guys input. I was wondering if this is standard practice in the music industry, cause I've never heard about an artist paying a label upfront to distrbute their music, but of I could be wrong....Can you guys help me out please....

the best thing to do is consult a lawyer to go over the paperwork for you and then you will be good if you ever have to go to court over this.

Most indie people pay for their distribution, but it's not that expensive. Usually around $500 for a full release, but it all depends on the marketing material. Also, they'll only distribute to stores in their network that request your release. That's the key, if you don't have fans physically walking in and asking for your release, stores won't stock it. Supply and Demand, only Demand feeds supply in this instance.

If you're a big enough name, you shouldn't be paying for distribution at all. The distro will take a portion of the album points and take their cut off the top, no need to pay them out of pocket up front or otherwise.

Best advice ever!

Whenever someone asks for money up front all kinds of red flags, bells and whistles should go off in your head.

BTW: Stop cross posting it's considered rude.

thanks for the info....I'm sorry about the cross posting...I didn't know the board rules...
