Question for live rapper people

Recently I played a stripper party at a large venue. There were a handful of rock bands, and inbetween the bands, while our musical gear was being loaded and unloaded, rap "groups" would take the stage and rap their rap over pre-recorded backing tracks played through the PA. No big deal. But I noticed that every group had like 2 or 3 guys actually rapping, one guy that just says stupid shit like "what" and "uhh", and then each group had like 5 additional people that just stood on stage and literally did nothing. They'd just stand there. Occasionally they'd wipe their face with a towel because it's hard work up there just standing.

My question: WTF is the point of the guys just standing there? Is it some street cred thing or something? Are they cool for just standing on stage while other guys rap? :confused:

If you don't have enough people, you can't get the neccessary amount of stank.

now seriously . .
there is supposed to be a set job to each person on stage -
the emcees . . . rap,
the djs . . .scratch and control the music board, etc.
the hypemen . . keep the crowd pumped up and buying they hype of the show
-----especially for an unknown artist or an artist doing a song that is not popular or familiar . . the hyepmen can make or break "acceptance" . . . their job is to animate the em cee . . that is . . anything that they can do which illustrates something the em cee says is . . an "add on" to the performance. especially since most people have to hear something over and over again before they really "like" it . . the hypemen chant certain lines in the background (especially the hook) to make the crowd join in .. or they behave in such a way as to make the crowd "feel" and buy in to what the song is about

is it hard work? hell yes!! when its being done correctly. there are some things a hypeman can say or do (staged) so he knows he will do it before he hits the stage. but there are some things you just come up with onthe spot - trial and error. sometimes it works. sometimes it doesnt.

now if you have hypemen who are really just taking up stage space . . i suggest you have a group who hasn't put that much thought into the overall picture. which still isnt that much of a problem b/c 1) they might be just starting out and have to learn it over time and/or 2) when there are multiple groups at a venue . . the sloppy ones make the good ones stand out all the more better . . so . .its still alll good in the long run. the tite crews benefit from having terrible acts to "look better than"

Okay thanks for the detailed response.

These guys I'm talking about just stood there and literally did absolutely nothing. They didn't have mics, they didn't hype anything, they didn't even move. Not even a head bob. They truly just stood there, looking dumb, and every rap act had the same thing. 3 or 4 guys with mics, and 5 or 6 guys on stage doing absolutely nothing. It was bizarre. No one seemed to dig it either.
 
well that sounds like novices or just some cats that wanna get on stage. you know, its not just rap music where there are people that just want to be on stage. the end result though, no matter what level. if people are just starin at u .. something is wrong!
hell it scares teh shit outta me cuz i try to have enough peoplle with me doin diff. stuff to keep the show active. but sometimes, the hypemen i pick just aint worth tish!!

I don't see why anyone would wanna be on stage and do nothing! I'd feel like a freaking jackass just standing on a stage while other people did stuff. We don't have that in rock music. If you aint part of the musical process, you're not coming anywhere near the fucking stage unless you have big tits and a tight ass. :spank: :drunk:

hypemen are gay as shit. I saw this video of MF Doom on stage and all these people were just making noises and acting a' fools. I bought a ticket to see the mc, not their dumb ass entourage.
