Hi guys, well I am thinking of buying a Yamaha MG10/2 mixer and a Shure SM57 mic to make good-quality recordings of me playing the drums. I'm still not too sure of the wiring needed and if the mixer will be able to even hook up to my computer. I believe I need a 2 ended male XLR cable, with one end in the mixer's mic preamp XLR port and from there a 2 ended 1/4 cable to a single ended 1/8 cable to plug into the input on the computer. PLease tell me if I'm doing something wrong or something should be changed.

Thanks.

Are you recording drum or drums?

That mic will work if you are just recording one drum, but if you want to mic you r whole set, you are going to need at least 4 mics: 2 overhead condensers, a kick mic, and a snare mic. Shure has an entry level drum mic'ing kit that might work for you. Check it out.

Hope that helps a little.

posting the same thing in two different threads is bad! its called cross posting.. all you need is (2) 1/4 cables (not stereo equipment cables...guitar cables), (1) 2 1/4 female to 1/8 male Y splitter(same concept as plugging 2 pairs of headphones into the same jack), and atleast a 6" 1/8 female to 1/8 male cable.

now how to put it together

plug the two 1/4 cables into the main outs of the mg10/2. plug the two 1/4 cables into the Y Splitter. plug the 1/8 female end of the 6" cable into the Y splitter and the other end into the computer's LINE INPUT. the reason i say not to connect the Y splitter into the computer is because the 1/4 cables connected to the Y splitter will bend the connection over time and then you'll only hear the left or right side if either.

Get you, Mr Expert!!! You're right though.

So to recap, pointlessly. You need a male-female XLR cable for the mic. You need two jack-jack leads/guitar leads (also called unbalanced or mono jack leads!) and a stereo splitter to combine the two guitar leads into your headphone-sized line in on your PC.

Easy!:)
