Ive heard that the HD 24 can be used with pro tools in order to get 24 tracks out into the mixing board. Im converting my studio over from adats to pro tools, and I am looking for a cheaper solution than getting pro tools HD to get as many tracks to my mixer as possible(dont want the mixer to lose its use, and would rather mix on it anyway). So can you actually transfer 24 tracks in real time back to it? For instance hit play in pro tools, and have the track outputs assigned, have them go through the HD 24 to the mixing board? Im sure I would need the firewire for this. If this doesnt work what can I do? Would I have to transfer the tracks out from pro tools into the HD 24 and then have them run into the board, but not in real time?

I don't use Pro Tools but I do use an HD24 as a 24 channel I/O along with a MOTU 2408 mkII as the interface. The RME Digi9652 that Deepwater mentions would serve this same funtion. You could buy just the RME or a MOTU (or anything with three banks of ADAT in and out) and Lightpipe in and out of your existing ADATs. I did it that way for a while till I got the HD24. Just my opinion but I feel the converters in the HD are better than any vintage of ADAT I've used. The MOTU has a little more flexability but it costs more too.
I'm using Cakewalk instead of PT. I can do exactly the same thing but lots cheaper than PT. Now if you need the portability to export multitrack projects in and out of your studio then PT is the way to go.

Motu 2408 - I forgot about that one. You might can get one off ebay for $400 or so. That would give you a lot of nice things like 8 anologe in/out and 24 channels of ADAT IN/Out

thanks, for the replies. I need to use pro tools, because that is what most of my clients expect, and request. Can you use a MOTU unit, and still use pro tools to record and mix, because I always thought that you had to have a digi design interface in order to record with pro tools, seeing as though they don't sell pro tools as standalone software?

You have to buy the hardware to get the software. You can get the small Digibox thing for about $500.00 and use the Motu.
