I recently read somewhere he now uses some custom made coin, with an ODD value. Like 3pence or something...
But yeah, 3 amps and some delay and chorus will get you SOMEWHERE there...

I remember 10 or 12 years ago hearing Brian May do an appearance on a local radio station. He was in the studio promoting the new Queen album and playing licks between songs. The DJ was amazed that he hadn't even brought an amp to the station, and asked what the little gadget he was playing through was. Brian said it was called a ZOOM. (This was back in the olden days, when the only Zoom product that even existed was the original black box, which had just come out. Do they even make those anymore?)
Anyway, guess what - it sounded just like Brian May when he played. Go figure.

...I dunno, but in my ears, the old black boxes sounded more fat and warm. Nowdays had different chip. Cheaper I think (?)...

THe original black ZOOM was great. It was one of those products that just absolutely floored me the first time I saw one. For its time, it was ground-breaking. Next they came out with a gray, wedge-shaped one, which absolutely blew chunks.
Since then they've sort of establsihed themselves as the "collosal-functionality-in-a-tiny-box" company. But their landmark product, as far as I'm concerned, will always be that first little black box. It just had all the mojo working for it - sound, looks, size, etc.

Brian used to record using at least 3 mics placed at different distances away from his amp. Then he'd progressively gate the mics so that the ones further away only open up during the louder sections.

two things:
1> it's easy to make a coin into a pick. put the coin on a hard, flat surface, and wail on it with a hammer until it is at least pick-sized. shape it as you desire-hell, i used to sharpen mine to razor edges when i used them (i was 15, ok? drawing blood with your gear was ALWAYS cool then!)
2> i'm told that brain may did a cool chained-delay effect with 4 columns of voxes, each column being sightly delayed from the one before it. my dad is going to do this with 4 vibro champs and 3 delaying devices.
