Maybe this is old news,

But I just found out that Quantegy is officaly done manufacturing tape. I almost cried. Maybe this is old news to some of y'all (they announced in Jan.) but I just found out. I am in shock and deppressed. I know there are other means of getting tape, but there is a reason why all major studios use Quantegy and not RMG, it is not as good. I know from first hand experience.

Supposedly ATR services is creating a line of tape that is supposed to be badass, but they have been saying this for over a year.

I think it (BASF) had more market penetration in Europe, but 468 has certainly been Scott Dorsey's favourite tape for some time. In any case, I'm using Zonal and RMGI now, or at least I will be when my stockpile runs out.

While it was a blow, I must admit I was intending to switch to RMGI as soon as it became available here.

The reason that many studios use(d) Quantegy is not that it's superior but rather that the company was the last tape manufacturer to offer widely available brand new tape and till RMGI started to roll out its own production. Also, the brand of Ampex stamped itself onto many peoples' psyche long ago as the tape to have and thus it continued with Quantegy. It also immensely helped that AMPEX / QUANTEGY had better penetration (using JP's term ), at least in North America (being made in the USA) and was available in most places at attractive prices. RMGI has been slow coming, especially here but it is exactly the same tape as the quality BASF / EMTEC formulations that people raved over in the past. RMGI has better slitting, more uniform and smoother oxide coating, rock stable binders and better quality control.

Really?

I used the stuff (RMG) once, and was not that impressed. Maybe I was just so used to Quantegy day in and day out that I was biased (no pun intended). But thanks to a few pints of Guinness, and your guys comments, I don't feel as bad. I guess I now have no choice but to welcome RMG into my studio with open arms (and ears).

I must say, I am looking forward to checking out the ATR tape...if it ever comes out.

What didn't you like about the tape ? Which exact formmulation was it and are you sure your recorder was properly biased and aligned / calibrated for this tape ?
